Powys Brecknock Federation of Women’s Institutes - CIO, held a special event at St Mary’s Church in Brecon on Friday, March 14, to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The meeting highlighted the challenges faced by women worldwide who do not enjoy the same freedoms as those in the UK. This year’s theme called for action to unlock "Equal Rights, Power, and Opportunities to All Women throughout the World."
Guest speaker Dr Sarah Ward Clavier delivered an engaging talk on the history of sub-postmistresses, tracing their roles back to the early Middle Ages when women worked as "Letter Carriers." She explained how, by the mid-1800s, women were running sub-post offices and taking on significant responsibilities, even from the time of the Penny Black stamp’s introduction in 1840. The talk provided fascinating insight into the vital contributions of women in the postal service over the centuries.
Attendees enjoyed the presentation, which was followed by tea and biscuits.
