The craft group of the Powys Radnor Federation WI (PRFWI) has been hard at work creating items for donation to The Bracken Trust.

The group recently presented heart cushions and drip bags, for those recovering from breast cancer, to the Llandrindod Wells-based charity.

The inspiration for the project came from Carolyn Grinnell, who had herself received tremendous support from the charity.

Carolyn, also a member of Howey WI and the PRFWI craft group, suggested the project to her fellow craft group members.

The results of the donations of material and subsequent work, are not only extremely practical and comfortable to use - the heart cushions and drainage drip bags are attractive too.

Special mention was made to the Sylvias, Meg, and Chris, for their contributions.

The presentation to the Chairman of The Bracken Trust Board, Howard Russon and CEO, Lisa Griffiths, was made by Jenny Keal the PRFWI Craft Group leader, with the High Sheriff of Powys, Lady Kathryn Silk and other guests in attendance.

A very pleasurable and productive afternoon was of course rounded off with tea and some delicious cakes.

The Bracken Trust was born on November 6, 1995, from the vision of Sister Grace Lawrence, Sister Beryl Lichtenstein, and Dr Hans Lichtenstein, who recognised the need for a cancer support centre.

Their fundraising journey began with a pop-up shop in Llandrindod Wells in 1996, successfully raising £6,000. Despite a challenging start, including a devastating fire, the Trust persevered. They launched a creative “buy a brick” campaign which, along with a generous £100,000 grant from The Henry Smith Charity, enabled them to buy and renovate a bungalow in Cefnllys Lane for £153,000.

The charity today provides support, advice and counselling to families affected by cancer in Wales. This includes support for patients, families, carers and bereaved relatives.

The Bracken Trust is located in a beautiful and secluded premises in Llandrindod Wells.
