Llandovery Cinema is thrilled to present Dan y Wenallt (Under Milk Wood) in Welsh, with English subtitles, as part of its new season of Welsh-language films.

This special screening will take place on Saturday, March 22, at 7 PM, followed by an exclusive Q&A session with the film’s director, Kevin Allen.

Thanks to successful funding from Ffilm Cymru Wales’ Film Exhibitor Fund, Sinema Llanymddyfri – Llandovery Cinema is bringing a rich programme of Welsh-language films, environmental documentaries, and accessible cinema experiences to the local community throughout 2025. This initiative, led by Hybu Llanymddyfri – Llandovery, aims to revitalise the town’s cultural scene, making cinema more inclusive and engaging for all.

This bold and visually striking adaptation of Dylan Thomas’ classic radio play offers a fresh perspective on a beloved work. The film, directed by Kevin Allen, reunites him with Rhys Ifans, over 15 years after their cult classic Twin Town. Ifans stars as both First Voice and Captain Cat, alongside an outstanding ensemble cast including Charlotte Church as Polly Garter.

Adapted into Welsh by T. James Jones, with a screenplay by Murray Lachlan Young, Michael Breen, and Kevin Allen, the film brings Thomas’ dreamlike verse to life in a radically surreal and provocative way. Allen’s vision challenges the idea that poetry should remain solely within the realm of reading, offering a cinematic experience that is powerful, imaginative, and immersive.

Filmed on location in Solva, Pembrokeshire, the film captures the essence of Llareggub, the fictional village at the heart of Thomas’ masterpiece.

“Funny and entertaining, never getting bogged down, this hyperactive, highly coloured adaptation directed by Kevin Allen sees Rhys Ifans step bravely up to the plate for an energetic retelling.”
