With fingers and toes crossed, the weather held out for the first every Three Cocks Summer Fete on Saturday the 10th. With the 30 traders and car boots, pizzas and hog roast van, two inflatables, six vintage vehicles, Archery (supplied by Black Mountains Activity Centre), plant sale (donations from the Old Railway Garden Centre), Teas and Coffees from Gwernyfed Community Council, a fabulous tombola stall from Gwernyfed High School and not forgetting the most important thing of a hot day the ice cream van the stage was set.
It all kicked off at 10am when the gates opened to the public and the judging began to the 15 different classes set on a fete competition. There were some wonderful entries across all ages. The judges even remarked on how close some scoring was.
Three Cocks Matters said a massive thank you to everyone that entered. The hall then opened up to all to view the entries and who came away with 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
The stream of visitors didn’t stop throughout the day bringing around 400 people through the gates to this free event. However, most people did help raise money by buying raffle tickets to support the super draw.
The top prizes were £300 heating oil from Oil 4 Wales, plants from the Old Railway, lunch for 2 at the Gwernyfed Walled Gardens, Activity vouchers from Black Mountain Activity Centre and so much more.
Three Cocks Matters Community Group can’t thank the local businesses enough for this support and kindness.
There were lots of different activities for the younger generations. From archery to a bouncy castle and slide. Then a wide range of games to play from badminton to domino’s. Paul Hartley from Glasbury was able to pop over for an hour as well to entertain the children.
While there was an amazing selection of different local producers such as Black Mountains Preserves (local jams, chutneys and much more), Antur (local brewery) and so many more. There were also a selection of wonderful stalls with jewellery, cards, prints, bowls, skin care, tractor models, cider, and so much more. People had lots to look at and enjoy.
In the afternoon Talgarth Fire station were able to come and support the event which the kids loved. This was also followed up by the local band Anti-Static. This capped off a beautiful day with a wide range to top songs we all know and love.
One major element of this first community event was seeing both the local Gwernyfed Community Council, the Gwernyfed high school and the community charity.

The Chair of Three Cocks Matters has already stated: “We are so proud of what a small group of people managed to deliver on Saturday and a massive thank you goes out to everyone who helped and attended. The money raised will go along way in helping regenerate the community. However, there is so much learning from this to help make next year’s event bigger and better.“
