The Court-Llacca Flock of Boughrood took Clun Forest sheep honours at last week’s Royal Welsh Show on Tuesday, July 23.

The flock, which is Britain’s oldest, was founded in 1902 at Court-Llacca Farm, Felin Fach, and was first shown at the 1936 Abergele Show.

It was the sixth time in the last seven shows that Clun Forest Sheep owner, and retired Police Officer Mike Eckley, has won the top prize.

Reflecting on his and his family’s success, Mike told the Brecon & Radnor Express: “It was such an honour to win the championship again at the best livestock show in Europe. And to be able to share it with my wife and three children was amazing.

“My family has been going to shows since 1936. My grandfather first went to the Abergele show that year (1936) and then my dad carried it on and then I’ve carried it on, so my two little boys and my daughter were with me this time, so they’d be the fifth generation.

“In total as a family we’ve won 17 times. It’s just brilliant.”

Mike is also currently in the process of writing a book on the history of the Clun Forest sheep as it is the centenary year next year. He hopes the book will be out next year in 2025.
