Powys farmers who have teamed up with Farming Connect to run on-farm trials are hosting on-farm events this September to share the latest results.
The farm walks will be held across Wales on 15 farms in the Farming Connect ‘Our Farms’ network and include Crickie Farm, a beef and sheep farm at Llangorse, near Brecon.
Farmers Roger and Dyddanwy Pugh are looking forward to showcasing some of their ongoing projects to farmers, helping the wider farming community to gain from what they have learned.
These include the farm’s transition to outwintering cattle on fodder beet and tackling mineral issues within its sheep flock.
Herbal leys have also been introduced onto the silage and grazing platform.
The Pughs believe they have much to gain from the farm walk too.
“We are looking forward to listening to any feedback that farmers may have and have the opportunity to network and share ideas,’’ says Roger.
“Our Farms“ farmers are involved in a diverse range of projects that assess the effects of introducing different practices, from feeding crimped peas and beans to pregnant ewes to using real time data at silage making to drive milk production from forage.
Siwan Howatson, Head of Technical at Farming Connect, said the programme of events lined up for September presents a valuable opportunity for farmers operating in all farming sectors, including horticulture, to see the on-farm trails in action and to learn about the results.
“With the trials implemented in 2023, there is a wealth of information that the farmers and the experts they have been working with are ready to share,” she said.
The farm walk at Crickie takes place on Wednesday, September 11, from 4pm to 7pm.
Another local “Our Farms” event takes place a week later on Wednesday, September 18 (4:30pm to 7pm) in Radnorshire. Robert Lyon and family welcomes you to the open day at Lower House Farm, near Llandrindod Wells.
