With the weather getting colder, organisations across Powys are being encouraged to provide warm and welcoming spaces for residents struggling with the cost of living.

Powys County Council is updating its register of warm spaces and offering grants of up to £1,000 to support these initiatives.

The council is appealing to community groups, charities, and organisations that can provide accessible, safe, and heated spaces where people can socialise, work, or take part in leisure activities while staying warm. Whether it's a church hall, community centre, or library, every warm space can make a difference to those in need.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Powys County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys said: “We are looking to update our list of accessible, safe and warm places in our communities, that was successfully set up two years ago.

“They can help to stave off the cold, and loneliness, for some of our most vulnerable residents so, if you think you can help your community out, please register your details and consider applying for a grant.”

The grants, funded by the Welsh Government and distributed through the Welsh Local Government Association, can be used to establish new warm spaces or improve existing ones. A total of £1.5 million has been allocated to councils across Wales to support this vital work.

Residents and organisations interested in joining the network can find more details and submit their applications on the council's website: https://en.powys.gov.uk/creatingwarmspaces

This initiative is part of a broader effort to support residents through the challenges of rising living costs and ensure that no one faces the winter months alone or without warmth.
