The Hay-on-Wye community has once again shown its generosity, with the Hay Royal British Legion Branch announcing a fundraising total of £7,271.18 for the annual Poppy Appeal.

Under the leadership of Pauline Williams and her partner John, working with the local cadet detachment, this year's appeal has surpassed expectations.

Nathan Heighway, Chair of Hay Royal British Legion, said: "I am deeply moved by the overwhelming response from our community. This generosity ensures that we can continue to support veterans and their families in meaningful ways. Every donation, large or small, makes a profound difference."

The funds raised will directly benefit veterans, serving personnel, and their families, providing essential support and services through the Legion's welfare initiatives.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause," added Pauline Williams.

"Your support ensures that we can honour the sacrifices of our servicemen and women and uphold the legacy of the Poppy Appeal."

Street collections, businesses displaying collection boxes, generous donations and the profits from a cabaret evening at Baskerville Hall Hotel all contributed to the success.

Hay RBL is fortunate to have its own Hub in Market Street and hold regular events for the local community. On the third Thursday of each month, there’s a 'Tea & Chat' session, welcoming everyone to meet old and new friends while enjoying reasonably priced tea, coffee, cake, and snacks. Monthly bingo sessions are also held, always a great bit of fun, and in May, they host their second annual gin-making competition.
