In an ongoing effort to promote public health, Mid-Powys Dentists are drawing attention to the severe effects of smoking on dental health. Smoking not only impacts overall health but also poses significant risks to teeth and gums, leading to long-term oral health issues.
Key Points on the Effects of Smoking on Teeth:
Tooth Discoloration: The nicotine and tar in tobacco products can cause teeth to become yellow or brown over time. This discolouration is often difficult to remove with regular brushing.
Gum Disease: Smoking is a major risk factor for periodontal disease, an infection of the gums that can lead to tooth loss
Bad Breath: Smoking can cause chronic bad breath, or halitosis, due to the chemicals in tobacco and the increase in plaque and bacteria in the mouth.
Delayed Healing: Smoking impairs the body's ability to heal which increases the chance of complications following procedures such as an extraction, dental implants and gum treatment.
Oral Cancer: Tobacco use is a leading cause of oral cancer. Symptoms can include sores that do not heal, lumps, or patches in the mouth. Early detection and cessation of smoking are crucial for reducing the risk.
Recognising the Signs of Oral Health Problems:
It's essential to recognise early signs of dental problems related to smoking, including persistent bad breath, bleeding gums, loose teeth, and sores that don't heal. Regular dental check-ups can help detect these issues early. Your dental team will advise you on the frequency of check ups based on your risk for dental and oral disease.
"Smoking has a profound impact on oral health, leading to preventable diseases and conditions," said Gareth Ratcliffe PAVO health promotions facilitator.
"We urge everyone to understand these risks and take steps toward quitting smoking to protect their teeth and overall health."
