The new digital X-ray unit at Breconshire War Memorial Hospital is set to open on Thursday, April 24, as part of a major upgrade to radiology services across Powys.

The Brecon unit is the latest in a series of upgrades to X-ray facilities at hospitals across Powys, including recent reopenings in Newtown, Welshpool, Llandrindod Wells, and Ystradgynlais. The installation work, which began in November, has temporarily redirected patients needing X-rays to other community hospitals, although other radiology services, such as ultrasound, have remained unaffected.

The new machines are designed to deliver faster, clearer images, improving diagnostic accuracy and helping to reduce waiting times for X-ray results. In addition, they use a lower dose of radiation than previous models, reducing exposure for patients.

The new units have been funded by a £1.7 million investment from the Welsh Government.

Claire Madsen, Executive Director for Allied Health Professionals, Health Sciences at Powys Teaching Health Board said: “I’m really pleased that this work is almost complete and I’d like to again, thank people for their patience and support while their local X-ray unit has been temporarily closed in recent months.

“Already we are seeing a major improvement to the service that we can deliver and our X-ray facilities now compare well with the best in the world.”
