FORMER Commonwealth Games champion Kirsty Wade was greeted with a hero's welcome as she carried the Queen's Baton Relay in her hometown. The former Olympian and three times Commonwealth Games gold medalist ran a lap of Llandrindod Wells Lake as the town hosted a stage of the Welsh leg of the baton's journey to the 2014 games in Glasgow. The Sunday, May 25 event also saw Presteigne bowler and Commonwealth gold winner Robert Weale and Naomi Owen, of Llandrindod, join the Welsh middle distance great in carrying the baton. Robert and Naomi will both be representing Wales in Scotland this July. A crowd, estimated to be just shy of 1,000 people, defied heavy showers to welcome the baton to Powys. The baton is on the final stages of its journey through all 70 nations and territories competing at the games. Helping organise the European leg, which started in Cyprus, is Chris Jenkins of Llangynidr, near Brecon. Chris is the chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales and the regional vice president of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
