On Saturday, June 29, the crew from Knighton Fire Station took part in charity walk along a section of the Wales Coast Path.
Dressed in their firefighting kit and equipment, and carrying donation collection buckets, crew members walked the 22-mile-long distance from Machynlleth Fire Station to Aberystwyth via Borth Station
The 22-mile trek amassed to more than 50,000 steps in total.
The crew took on the charity walk to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity – which provides specialist lifelong support for members of the UK’s fire services community. To ensure the Charity can do this for more than 5,000 people a year and to meet the £9m cost of operating its support services, it is dependent on regular donations from fire and rescue service personnel, past and present, as well as the public.
With more than £550 raised during the charity walk, plus donations received through their JustGiving page, the crew has currently raised more than £3,900. A local dog walker, ‘Paws a While’, held a sponsored dog walk to increase their funds.
The crew is still accepting donations through their JustGiving page and any donation - large or small – would be greatly appreciated.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) personnel who took part in the charity walk were: Group Manager Phil Morris, Watch Manager Martin Neary, Crew Manager Marty Jones, Crew Manager Elliott Jones, Crew Manager Aled Jones, Firefighter Gary Evans, Firefighter Rees Morris, Watch Manager John Tanner and Station Manager Kerry Hughes. They were supported by retired Watch Manager Dai Price as well as friends and family.
The crew members were fuelled by food and refreshments that had been kindly donated by local businesses. Knighton Co-op, Knighton Costcutter, AJ Pugh Butchers, Little Black Sheep Café, Tower House Gallery Café, Lorna’s Sandwich Shop, Lou’s Bakes Treats and Radnor Hills all kindly donated refreshments for the walk.
The Coast Path is 870 miles long and Wales is one of a few countries in the world to have a continuous coastal footpath stretching the entire length of its coastline.
