More than 600,000 pensioners in Wales are set to benefit from a pay boost following the UK Government's confirmation of a 4.1 per cent increase in the state pension for 2025/26.
This increase is part of the government's commitment to the state pension's "triple lock," which ensures that the pension rises by the highest of 2.5 per cent, inflation, or earnings growth. For many pensioners in Wales, this means an extra £470 this year, with a total of around £1,900 in increased payments over the course of this parliament.
The pension rise comes at a time when the UK Government is also ramping up efforts to ensure more pensioners are claiming Pension Credit. Following a campaign to boost uptake, an additional 50,000 pensioners have successfully claimed the benefit, which is worth, on average, £4,300 a year. Pension Credit also unlocks additional support such as help with housing costs, council tax, and free television licenses.
Cllr Matthew Dorrance (Brecon West) has welcomed the news.
“The state pension boost will be incredibly welcome news for pensioners in Powys, putting up to £470 extra in their pockets,” he said.
“The UK Labour Government is committed to delivering for our pensioners – ensuring their financial stability through the triple lock and targeting support towards those who need it most.”
