Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team’s busy festive period has continued with a callout to locate a lost horse rider and a callout to assist an injured mountain bike rider.

The team were called out on Friday, December 27, by Gwent Police to assist with a search for a lone horse rider who had become lost on the mountain above Nantyglo, Gwent.

They arrived at the nearest vehicle access point and joined up with police officers. Using PhoneFind technology, rescue team members gained a good indication of the the horse and rider’s position.

This, together with team members’ local knowledge meant they soon had team members and police officers with the rider and horse.

A spokesperson for Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: “Thankfully they were both uninjured and able to be walked off the mountain to safety. We’re very grateful to the residents of the nearby farm for their help with this incident.

“Once everyone was safely off the mountain it was then back to base and away to our homes shortly after 8pm.”

The following day, Saturday, December 28, volunteers from the rescue team were back out on call as they were requested to assist a fallen bike rider at Bike Park Wales.

The rescue team helped with the extrication off the mountain of the injured rider.

A spokesperson from Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team spoke about the callout. They said: “The bike park’s first responders had done a great job of stabilising the gentleman with immediate medical care and pain relief for suspected spinal and rib injuries.

“With seamless joint working we provided additional pain relief, full body immobilisation and stretcher carry off the mountain.

“We continued to assist with monitoring until the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust Ambulance arrived for onward transport to hospital.

“We hope the gentleman’s injuries aren’t serious and our fingers are crossed that he’s back on his bike soon.”

This callout was the team’s fourth in four days, with the streak starting on Christmas Day.
