Powys County Council’s Fleet Management Team has been named Public Services Operator of the Year at the prestigious Logistics UK Awards 2024.
The award ceremony, held in London in December, celebrated excellence in the logistics sector across the UK. Powys’ team triumphed over strong competition from the Clancy Group, Lothian Buses, Scottish Water, and Tower Transit.
The accolade recognises Powys as the first county council and the first heavy goods vehicle (HGV) operator in Wales to achieve accredited membership in the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s (DVSA) Earned Recognition Scheme. This national initiative acknowledges organisations with strong vehicle and driver safety records and a commitment to sharing performance data with the DVSA.
Powys was also recognised for helping 20 of its employees to become qualified transport managers.
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, congratulated all those involved.
“We are doing the right thing by prioritising the safety of our vehicles and drivers, and our investment in training helps to ensure resilience and a good knowledge base across our highways, waste and recycling, and transport teams,” she said.
David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, added: “All those shortlisted for an award should be very proud of their achievements. The competition was fiercer than ever, generating plenty of ‘heated debates’ among the judges, and all our winners can be justifiably satisfied that they are at the very top of their game.”
The council’s fleet managers oversee a vast operation, managing more than 500 vehicles and 1,000 drivers across the region, ensuring vital services are delivered safely and efficiently.
