St Mary’s Brecon Church is launching a new initiative, which will see significant improvements to the historic church and tower.

The church has launched the Beacon Project. The tower, which dates back to the early 1500s, has recently had its clock and chime repaired having been broken for some time.

The project comes with a positive. The Beacon Project is a response to the growing congregation and the evolving needs of the Brecon community. It aims to modernise the church’s facilities, improve accessibility, and create multifunctional spaces for various community activities.

The Reverend Canon Dr Mark Clavier, the vicar of St Mary’s, emphasises the importance of these changes. He said: “Our goal is to create a space that is inclusive and welcoming to all, reflecting our commitment to serve every member of our community.”

The Beacon Project will transform the church building, upgrading the general layout, cafe kitchen and soft furnishings amongst other things. Central to the plans will be a new mezzanine at the west end, which will enable people to dine beneath the striking west window. The new designs will also accommodate a wide range of activities, from worship services to community gatherings.

The creation of multifunctional spaces within the church is a key aspect of the project. These spaces will be designed to host various events. By offering such facilities, St Mary’s aims to become a central hub for community life, promoting social interaction and mutual support.

The church is actively seeking community involvement to ensure the success of the Beacon Project. Local residents, businesses, charities and other organizations are invited to a public consolation at 7.00 pm on Wednesday, 19 June.

“The Beacon Project is not just about improving our building; it’s about strengthening our community,” says Fr Mark. “We invite everyone to join us in this exciting venture to create a brighter future for Brecon.”
