2024 Montane Dragon's Back Race Trailer

One of the world’s most challenging mountain-running events begins today (Monday, September 2) in Wales.

The Dragon’s Back Race is renowned for its demanding route along the rugged spine of Wales, including legendary peaks such as Yr Wyddfa, Tryfan, the Glyderau, and Pen y Fan. It is celebrated as the ultimate mountain-running challenge, pushing competitors to their limits.

The race begins at the historic Conwy Castle and concludes on Saturday, September 7, at the iconic Cardiff Castle.

This year, over 350 ultra runners from 26 nations are taking on the gruelling six-day journey, covering a 380km course with an elevation gain of 16,400m.

The event attracts elite athletes from around the world. In the men’s race, former champion Welsh athlete Simon Roberts is a standout favourite, known for his 2021 victory and recent wins at other prominent ultra-running events. He will face strong competition from international stars such as Salomon athlete Max King from the USA.

On the women’s side, SCOTT athlete Jo Meek, the 2023 Cape Wrath Ultra winner and current female record holder, is set to lead the charge. She will be joined by formidable competitors like Laura O’Driscoll, Elsa Morgan, and Zoe Murphy, all aiming for a place on the podium.

This year’s race also features several inspirational participants, whose stories of perseverance and determination will captivate the audience. Notable entrants include Jeff Glasbrenner, a Paralympian and the first American amputee to summit Everest, and Buzz Burrell, a legendary US-based ultra-runner competing at the age of 72.
