Des Lally and the former mayor of Llandrindod Wells were among the people to be recognised at the High Sheriff Awards.

David Price, the High Sheriff of Powys, recognised five people at the awards, including Brecon hero Des for his “extraordinary fundraising efforts”.

Des, who dedicated his award to the charities and his supporters, received the award as he walked up Pen y Fan 365 times in a year raising £60,457.76 for Cancer Research UK and Help for Heroes.

Cllr Price and his wife Elaine held the awards ceremony on Sunday, April 7 at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells.

Others recognised were Steffan Harris, Sarah Robson, former Llandrindod mayor Cllr Jon Williams and Ollie Harding who was represented by his father, Martyn Harding.

Cllr Williams received his award for the work he’s done for the community in Llandrindod with the town council and on his own through separate groups.

He said: “It was a really nice gesture. I’m used to giving out the awards to people who’ve done extraordinary things,

“I don’t normally think what I do is anything special, so it was lovely to be recognised by the High Sheriff.”

Cllr Price said: “There are so many people across Powys, who through voluntary work, showing exceptional talent, or doing extraordinary things, contribute greatly to the life of this county.

“The awards are a means to simply say well done, and hope that their work will be an inspiration for others to follow.

“Congratulations to all the recipients.”
