Builth Wells Rotary recently hosted the local heats of the Rotary Young Photographer Competition 2025 at Ysgol Calon Cymru’s Llandrindod Wells campus.

The competition challenges students to capture an image inspired by an annual theme, with this year’s theme, ‘Wonderful Water’, offering plenty of creative scope.

15 students in Year 10 entered this year's competition, each submitting a high-quality image along with a brief explanation of their inspiration. The standard was exceptionally high, making judging a tough task. Entries showcases a variety of interpretations of the theme.

The winner was Beba Watts-Emirali, whose striking photograph of a rain-soaked seaside pier reflecting the evening sky impressed the judges. The image’s composition and atmospheric quality stood out among the entries. Beba’s image now progresses to the District Competition, with the chance of reaching the Regional Final at the Senedd, where the best young photographers from across Wales will compete.

Builth Wells Rotary President Robert Evans presented certificates to all participants, recognising their effort and talent.

The competition was once again judged by Bob Walls, Chairperson of Builth Wells Photographic Club. Bob and fellow club members are passionate about encouraging novice photographers to develop their skills. Affiliated to the Welsh Photographic Federation, the club is a small group of about 20 enthusiastic, mostly amateur photographers, that meet up on a regular basis to take part in competitions, hear visiting speakers and share knowledge.

The Rotary Young Photographer Competition gives participants the chance to express themselves through photography, whilst interpreting the competition’s annual theme, in an imaginative way.

‘Rebuilding’ proved to be an enticing theme for the budding photographers who made it to the national final last year.
