One of Brecon Phoenix Amateur Boxing Club's most promising young talents, Charlie Symmons, made quite an impression on Saturday night as he stepped into the ring for his debut match at Caldicot.
The 16-year-old faced a tough challenge, going up against a compact and more experienced competitor from Pontnewydd Amateur Boxing Club in a 62kg bout that had everyone on the edge of their seats.
From the opening bell, Charlie got right into action, using his reach to score points from a distance. As the rounds progressed, however, his opponent closed in, landing some solid punches closer in. A notable moment came midway through the first round when Charlie suffered a bleeding nose. Despite the setback, he didn’t let it affect him, showing remarkable determination to keep pressing forward.
Support came from his corner, which included World Youth Champion Dan Pitt, who provided valuable encouragement throughout the bout. As they headed into the final round, Charlie's team felt the scores were even, setting the stage for an intense finish. In the last two minutes, Charlie summoned all his strength and energy, delivering a strong performance that ultimately led him to a split decision victory after three rounds.
“This was a great result for Charlie” said coach, Dave Gilbert.
“He’s worked extremely hard in the gym preparing for bouts, and it’s great to see it pay off.”
