Lyndon Jones scored two goals to help Builth Wells see off Llangollen Town, while Llandrindod Wells surrendered a two-goal lead to share the points with Kerry.

ARDAL LEAGUE NORTH EAST

Builth Wells followed up their win against Ardal League North East leaders, Bow Street with another polished display to see off Llangollen Town 3-0 on The Lant Field. The Bulls were excellent, outplaying their North Wales visitors in every area of the pitch in what was arguably their best performance of the season.

There was little goalmouth action in the early stages but Builth went in front following a moment of magic from Tommy Rowlands on 24 minutes which was worth the admission money alone. Topscorer, Rowlands latched on to a long ball from Joe Wozencraft and netted a superb dipping volley from 25 yards with Llangollen keeper, Oliver Bentley in no man’s land. Lyndon Jones added a second with a low drive into the bottom corner from just outside the box through a crowded goalmouth and past the unsighted keeper.

Within two minutes of the second half kicking off, Jones rifled home his second and Builth‘s third following good work from Ollie Woods and it was game over. Woods had a couple of headed opportunities to extend the lead, both from Rowlands’ crosses. Builth looked after the ball well and the fact goalkeeper, Kham Steventon did not have to make a meaningful save all afternoon shows just how comfortable it was for The Bulls.

Ever-improving Llandrindod Wells were denied a quickfire league double over Kerry by Matt Mumford who netted a 93rd minute equaliser to earn The Lambs a 2-2 draw at Dolforgan Park, where Kieran McCarley had earlier given the Spa men a two-goal lead.

Having beaten Kerry at home the previous week, Llandrindod, who have now taken seven points out of a possible nine, were the better side in the first half on Saturday and McCarley headed them in front from Samed De Groot’s cross. Ashley Jones set McCarley up for his second on the half hour and further chances fell to McCarley and Kejan Foryszewski with Llandrindod well on top.

An unfortunate own goal from Jones in first half stoppage time handed Kerry a lifeline and the second half was then far more even without many chances until late on. Mumford levelled in stoppage time and both sides had an opportunity after that. Llandrindod keeper, James Barker denied Kerry a winner while Liam Hall could have snatched it for Llandrindod after turning well but he fired straight at Ryan Andrew in the Kerry goal.

Radnor Valley are now without a win in four after losing 1-0 at home to Penycae. There was little to choose between the sides but Penycae’s Harry Bowen grabbed the all-important goal two minutes into the second half.

The first half was evenly contested with Joey Price and Thomas Edwards missing chances for Radnor. Bowen broke the deadlock with a super 30-yard volley and from then Radnor pressed for an equaliser. Price and Edwards again went close and Ieuan Price saw his effort blocked on the line but it was not to be for The Goats. Radnor now have back-to-back home games against Chirk AAA and Llansantffraid Village, the league’s current bottom two, and will be keen to pick up points to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere Dolgellau remain third in the table after a 2-1 home success over Llansantffraid Village - their fourth win in a row. Former Rhayader Town midfielder, Dennis Bates and Will Grufydd netted for Dolgellau in the opening 10 minutes with Alex Mane pulling one back just before half-time. As a result Llansantffraid are now bottom with Chirk AAA picking up a point in a 1-1 draw with Rhos Aelwyd. Ryan Houghton put Chirk ahead in the first half but James Rumsey equalised after the break.

Cefn Albion beat Llanfair United 3-0 thanks to Torne Samuels, Connor Kendrick and Tom Smith.

Brecon Corries had no game in the Ardal League South East but their youth team suffered a 4-1 defeat at Canton in the FAW Reserve League South East on Sunday, with Mitchell Davies their goalscorer.

CENTRAL WALES CUP

Alex Hicks grabbed a 91st minute winner as Builth Wells progressed to the quarter-finals of the Central Wales Challenge Cup with a 3-2 win over Llanfair United at Latham Park last Wednesday night. Josh Joyce headed Builth in front after six minutes from Joe Wozencraft’s long ball but Llanfair soon levelled when Builth captain, Ryan Powell was credited with an own goal following a corner.

That was how it remained until 10 minutes from time when player-manager, Karl Seliaerts put a well organised Llanfair ahead with a penalty. But Tommy Rowlands levelled two minutes later after being picked out by Adam Farmer. And just when the teams were thinking about a penalty shoot-out, midfielder Hicks won it for The Bulls capping a man of the match display with a super 20-yard volley.

Radnor Valley hope to join Builth in the quarter-finals when they play their third round tie at Four Crosses on Sunday.

DRAGON SIGNS FAW AMATEUR TROPHY

Bow Street are through to the last 16 of the Dragon Signs FAW Amateur Trophy with Courtney Perkins bagging their winner in a 4-3 verdict at CPD Llannefyd. Richie Ricketts (2) and Rhys Hughes got the earlier goals for the Ardal League North East leaders.

Llanidloes lost on penalties at Lex X1 where it ended 1-1, with Joe Evans netting for The Daffs and Llanrhaeadr bowed out 3-2 at FC Cwmaman where two goals from Jacob Edwards were not enough to keep them in the competition.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)

The MMP Central Wales League (South) title is Knighton’s to lose. The Radnor Robins, yet to drop a point, won twice last week and now hold a huge 14-point lead over their closest rivals. On Saturday, Knighton beat defending champions, Penparcau 5-2 with Connor Bird marking his return to Bryn-y-Castell with two of the goals.

The in-form Taylor Wozencraft claimed the first when his corner came off the bar and went in off a defender. Bird then bagged his brace, the first from Callum Stead’s cross and the second a beauty from 25 yards, before Mattie Davies pulled one back with a penalty for Penparcau who travelled with a bare 11. Second half goals from Callum Stead, who netted from outside the box, and Luke Boundford, who headed home an Adam Worton free-kick, sealed it for Knighton with player-manager, Davies getting a second for the visitors in stoppage time.

Rhayader Town remain joint second following a solid 3-1 victory at Bow Street Reserves with captain, Ryan Addison scoring twice for the second week running. Owen Evans had given Bow Street an early lead but Sion Herman and Addison (2) turned it around before half-time and there were no second half goals.

Builth Wells Reserves returned to winning ways with topscorer, Dave Thomas bagging a hat-trick in a 3-0 success at bottom of the table Llanidloes Town Reserves. Thomas put The Bulls ahead with a 10th minute penalty when Ceri Jones was brought down. Builth had several other first half chances before Thomas completed his treble early in the second half with assists from the returning Blake Evans and George Lloyd.

Penybont United ended a run of seven straight league defeats playing out a creditable goalless draw with Caersws Development at The Racecourse but Presteigne St Andrews saw their barren run continue. Presteigne had themselves looked to be on course for a point at home against Penrhyncoch Reserves until Harley Lawton snatched a 2-1 win for the visitors with a 96th minute penalty. Lawton had given Penrhyncoch the lead midway through the first half but Jamie Griffiths equalised from a Niall Rhodes corner with 15 minutes remaining. Griffiths saw red for Presteigne before Lawton netted the penalty Presteigne felt was rather dubious.

Penrhyncoch had picked up three further points earlier in the week with a 5-2 victory over Aberystwyth University. They virtually had the points in the bag in the opening 22 minutes forging a four-goal lead through Cai William, Geoff Kellaway, Ifan Burrell and Harley Lawton. Penrhyn then had Griff Huws sent off but Burrell extended the lead a minute into the second half before Finley Wright and Thomas Knipe got late replies for the students.

Tregaron pulled off an impressive 4-1 win over Ffostrasol with all the goals in the second half. Iolo Thomas struck first for Ffostrasol but Tregaron stormed back through Jac Hockenhull, Ryan Davies, Paul James and an own goal to maintain second spot in the league table.

Llanilar defeated Aberystwyth University 3-0 thanks to Osian Williams, Harvey Matthews and Guto Roberts while Bont extended their recent unbeaten league run to nine with a 4-2 win against Machynlleth. Jordan Lee Perry, Ethan Rees, Garin Evans and Dion Davies shared the goals for Bont with Johan Auf Den Kamp and Louis Roberts replying for Mach.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUE (NORTH)

Welshpool Town are the new leaders in the MMP Central Wales League (North) following a 5-0 win at Trewern United. Ricky Litchfield, Teilo Gittins-Turner, Ethan Kinsey, Kelvin Sargeant and Joe Cadwallader were on target while Trewern had George Clifton sent off.

Forden United are three points behind Welshpool with four games in hand after goals from Josh Lenc, Alistair Williams, Ross Harris and Sam Evans secured a 4-1 win over Llanfyllin Town.

Waterloo Rovers saw their recent winning run ended in a 2-1 defeat at home at the hands of Montgomery Town who took the lead through Jack Williams. Tom Ellis equalised from the penalty spot before half-time but Harry Evans won it for Montgomery in the last minute.

Jordan Dean and Will Howard scored for Four Crosses in their 2-0 win at Barmouth who had Daniel Thomas sent off while Bishops Castle ran out 4-1 winners over Dyffryn Banw with Toby Mills, Seth Bateson, Kieran Mulloch and Jamie Oakley on the scoresheet.

Abermule were the day’s biggest winners with Tom Davies completing a hat-trick in an 8-0 drubbing of Tywyn Bryncrug. Dylan Stephens and James Stovell each scored twice with Shayne Kelly also finding the net.

OTHER LEAGUES

Rhayader Town Reserves were on cloud nine after knocking Padarn United off the top of the Aberystwyth & District League with a stunning 5-0 victory on The Weirglodd. Rhys Thomas and Liam Addison (pen) put The Red Kites two up at the break and Lewis Pugh, Dillon Leary and Addison completed the win in the second half.

Two late goals from Kyle O’Shea gave Talgarth Town a 2-1 home success against Forgeside in the Candour Talent Gwent Central League first division. Joseph Silk had put Forgeside ahead with just nine minutes remaining but O’Shea rescued The Royals with his late double.

In the Bernie Jones Memorial Cup, there were first round wins for Newcastle and Felindre. An early penalty from Craig Morris was enough to earn Newcastle a narrow 1-0 home success over Waterloo Rovers Reserves while Felindre edged a 2-1 verdict over former Mid Wales League (South) rivals, St Harmon. Felindre, who are the Cup holders, took an early two-goal lead through Lyndon Bevan and Lloyd Davies but had to endure a few anxious late moments when Robbie Hodnett’s own goal raised St Harmon hopes. Llandrindod Wells Reserves bowed out of the competition beaten 5-0 at Llanfechain although the scoreline does not reflect Llandrindod’s performance.

Meanwhile Hay St Marys Reserves had a day they will rather forget in the RTM Brickwork Merthyr League as they crashed to a 15-1 defeat at Heolgerrig Red Lion Community with Finley Harris netting their consolation.
