Talgarth comfortably negotiated their way into the second round draw for the Emrys Morgan Cup following a 6-1 win over former Mid Wales League (South) rivals Newcastle at the King George V Playing Fields.

The home team were buoyed by their first win of the season, when they defeated Race 4-0 on home turf the previous weekend, whilst Newcastle had won the only match played so far in the Montgomeryshire League.

The Royals broke the deadlock after just seven minutes when Tom Sharman-Jones beat Newcastle goalkeeper Jack Smith to the ball from Brian Keddle's angled cross-field delivery.

But the Shropshire club were back in level terms 11 minutes later when Morgan Oakley latched on to a through ball before rounding Talgarth Town keeper Tom Bevan and turning the ball into an empty net.

The Breconshire outfit looked to hit back immediately when veteran midfielder Gavin Perry saw his 25-yard drive saved by Smith in the 21st minute before Frazer Mcanally was unable to keep his shot on the turn under the crossbar four minutes later after being picked out from a cross on the right side of the penalty area.

Perry struck the near post direct from a corner a couple of minutes later before the hosts regained the lead after 29 minutes when Grzes Chodnicki was played through on goal by Tom Francis before sliding the ball past the advancing Smith.

Newcastle looked to respond once again as Richard Williams headed over Bevan's goal on the half-hour mark from a cross on the right.

The first-half concluded with Keddle firing a low shot across the face of goal in the 36th minute, after the Royals had penalty appeals turned down for a challenge on Chodnicki by referee Gareth Ratcliffe.

The Royals started the second-half on the front foot with Perry having a header saved from a cross on the right flank in the opening minute.

The Salopians were very much still in the tie and came close to equalising in the 58th minute. Oakley did well to dig out a low driven from near the corner flag but Carl Price saw his effort fly narrowly past Bevan's near post.

But any hopes that the visitors had of winning this tie disappeared quickly, when Talgarth Town proceeded to score three goals within the space of five minutes.

The Breconshire club extended their advantage in the 64th minute when defender Guy Williams emphatically headed home from a Jordan Harvey corner.

Talgarth Town added a fourth goal three minutes later when Smith spilled a Harvey shot and Kyle O'Shea turned home the loose ball.

O'Shea doubled his tally in the 69th minute when he was on hand to convert Harvey's low cross from out on the left flank that gave Smith no chance to keep out.

The Royals completed the scoring with four minutes remaining on the clock when O'Shea completed his hat-trick by heading home from Harvey's deep free-kick into the penalty area and conclude a successful afternoon for the Breconshire club.
