Gwernyfed claimed their third win in eight days, cruising to a dominant victory over Whiteheads, a team coached by Wales international Aaron Wainwright.

The home side ran in twelve tries, with captain Jack “Sol” Williams touching down for Gwernyfed’s 100th try of the season in only their 13th league match.

From the outset, Gwernyfed asserted their dominance. Fly-half Joe Winfield’s accurate penalty kick to the corner set up a line-out, where the pack, powered by the forwards, worked their way towards the line. Scrum-half Tom Griffiths was quick to seize the opportunity, taking the ball and diving over to open the scoring. Winfield added the conversion.

The first 10 minutes of play were all Gwernyfed, with centre Tyler Morris weaving through the opposition defence to offload the ball to right wing Will Lloyd, who crossed for another try.

Despite the scoreline, Whiteheads were never less than determined. A well-executed try from their centre reduced the deficit when he found a gap in the Gwernyfed defence. However, the visitors’ joy was short-lived as the home side responded almost immediately. Lock Ollie Rose, enjoying a strong run of form, powered through to add another try to the scoreboard.

The second quarter saw the home side extend their lead further, with Winfield scoring a brilliant individual try from 40 metres out. His dazzling sidestep left defenders trailing in his wake, and he dotted down under the posts to secure the bonus point. The next try came from broken play, as Craig Parry and Lloyd Powell tidied up well, and Winfield timed his pass perfectly to Dylan Skyrme, who finished off the move.

The scoreline continued to grow as Gwernyfed capitalised on a scrum deep in their own half. Winfield carried the ball before chipping over the defence, and Tyler Morris was quick to chase and collect. Tom Griffiths and Winfield then combined to release Lloyd Powell, who found full-back Ryan Davies. From 30 metres out, it was no contest - Davies stormed through, leaving a trail of failed tacklers in his wake to score the first of his hat-trick.

The dogged visitors did get another converted try on the board before the break, but at 40-17, the die was cast.

The second half saw Gwernyfed continue their clinical play, with Ryan Davies scoring a memorable try from his own half, after a chip over the defence.

The forward replacements also played a pivotal role in maintaining the pressure, with Kyle Davies delivering a standout performance, capped by a try of his own out wide.

Centre Gethin Davies had come off the bench at the break and Tyler Morris had given Winfield a well-earned 40 minutes’ respite, moving to 10. The changes did nothing to stop the torrent of tries, with Gethin Davies the creator of a score finished by Tyler Morris.

Gwernyfed’s 100th try was a memorable one, with excellent teamwork starting from a scrum on their own five-metre line. The backs moved the ball quickly through the hands of Morris, Davies, Skyrme, and Tom Millington, setting up Williams to dot down.

Skyrme and Lloyd added further tries and the result was never in doubt, with Winfield and Morris sharing nine successful conversions between them.

The unbeaten Gwernyfed travel to Blaenavon on Wednesday to face Forgeside, followed by a trip to Llanhilleth next weekend.
