On Saturday, April 5, Brecon Rugby Club’s Under 13s made history in Merthyr Tydfil by booking their place in the Cardiff Rugby Cup Plate Final.
The team secured a convincing 34-19 victory over Llantwit Fardre to book their spot in the final.
This win marks the first time in more than 12 years that a Brecon team has reached the finals of the Cardiff Rugby Cup.
They will now travel to Cardiff on Tuesday, April 22, to face Llandaff at Arms Park.
Speaking about the win, head coach Dale Williams told the B&R: “We’re absolutely chuffed to bits. We knew it would be a tough game but the boys played out of their skins to come away convincing winners in the end.
“It was a moment to relish, that’s for sure,” he added.
The team is led by captain Lewis Jones and vice-captain Ewan Evans, and they are now eager to get their hands on some silverware.
Speaking about the upcoming final, Mr. Williams said: “I think we are quietly confident; we’ve got nothing to fear but fear itself, as the old saying goes. We know we’re good enough, so as long as we play our game, we’ve got the players to play the way we want to play.
“If we get the momentum and settle into the game, I’m sure we’ll come away with a nice little win.
“There are 50 minutes between them and winning the plate, and they’ll be very happy boys if that’s the case!'"
Before their semi-final, the team received well-wishes in video form from several figures in the rugby community, including Wales international and Dragons wing Rio Dyer.
A fleet of buses is set to travel to Cardiff for the final to support the Under 13s as they aim for victory
Mr Williams said: “We’ve got a massive extended squad of 28 players, believe it or not. Unfortunately, we can’t play every single one of them because we are restricted to how many we can use.
“We have a semi-development side and a full 15-a-side that we can select from to step up and play whatever type of game we want to play. They’re all very capable players and some new guys that are starting to learn the game - they’re doing really well.”
