Brecon’s four-match winning streak was brought to an end on Saturday with a defeat to Narberth, despite a dramatic second-half fightback that nearly saw them pull off an incredible turnaround.
Narberth 39 - Brecon 28
The game began with Brecon struggling in the scrum, an area they had previously dominated this season. From the very first scrum, Narberth had the upper hand, forcing Brecon back and earning a series of penalties.
Inside 34 minutes Brecon had conceded four tries - two of these being penalty tries - along with two yellow cards. Narberth's two other tries from Lewis Gibby and Geraint Llewelyn.
It was looking bleak for Brecon, but they did made good use of what time there was remaining in the half. Alwyn Lee powerfully drove through the last tackle to score and Jake Newman added the extras.
A turning point came in second half when Narberth were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card for cynical play at the breakdown. Brecon seized the opportunity, with Aaron Bramwell cutting a great line to score under the posts.
Logan McIntosh followed up with a third score for Brecon, and Dafydd Edwards added another out wide to bring the score to a tantalizing 29-28, with just 10 minutes remaining.
A remarkable win was now a possibility, but it wasn’t to be. Brecon tried to run out of defence but were caught, penalised and Narberth kicked the penalty.
With time running out, Brecon tried to chase the game and were ambitious, but their passing game let them down as they threw a poor pass on the Narberth 10-metre line. Wing Dean James hacked the ball clear to scored under the posts. The conversion was successful and Brecon mounted one last flourish. Lewis Jones again threatened off a tap penalty but Brecon were denied by a knock-on.
