Brecon claimed their third consecutive victory with an emphatic 45-26 win at Llangennech on a bright spring afternoon.

Despite squad reshuffles and missing key players, the visitors produced a commanding performance, running in six tries to secure a bonus-point victory.

Llangennech, boasting three wins in their last four games, posed a stern challenge. However, Brecon’s younger players, including former youth team members Huw Jones, Joel Price, and debutant prop Iestyn Phillips, stepped up admirably. Athletic team stalwart Dafydd Edwards also made a strong impact off the bench.

The match continued the high-scoring pattern of recent weeks, with Brecon’s six tries outmatching Llangennech’s four. Fly-half James Dixon was outstanding, controlling the game with pinpoint distribution and reading of the game, as well as a perfect record off the tee, slotting six conversions and a penalty.

Full-back Jake Newman shone in attack and defence, scoring a superb 60-metre interception try while also proving rock-solid under pressure. Meanwhile, winger Sam Jones stole the show with a hat-trick, bringing his season tally to 13. His first, a blistering 50-metre effort, saw him outpace defenders before a deft step left the cover floundering.

Second-row Callum Bradbury, consistently excellent this season, finally got on the scoresheet. His deft pop pass set up one of the tries of the day before he chased down a kick ahead to score his own well-earned try.

The opening exchanges were evenly matched, with both teams eager to spread the ball wide. Brecon struck first through Sam Jones, finishing a flowing move after strong runs from Huw Jones and Logan McIntosh. Dixon converted, but Llangennech responded swiftly, centre Wil Thomas crossing after a break from Leon Randell, with Steffan Jac Jones adding the extras.

Newman’s superb interception try restored Brecon’s lead, and Dixon converted again, but Llangennech hit back with a well-worked forward drive, with hooker Callum Jenkins burrowing over.

The first half remained tightly contested until Brecon seized control before the break. A Bradbury line-out steal on halfway launched a sweeping attack, ending with prop Chris Phillips crashing over. Dixon’s touchline conversion extended the lead.

The game was ultimately decided in the third quarter. Within minutes of the start of the second half, Brecon scored again - Jones’ second try coming about following slick handling.

The fifth try quickly followed. A lovely Lewis Jones chip was made all the better as the ball bounced infield and into the path of chasing Bradbury, who scored under the posts for an easy conversion.

The sixth try came with 20 minutes to go. Newman gathered a Llangennech chip ahead and broke into the opposition half. Ioan Edwards made a great break in midfield and fed brother Dafydd, who continued the move and linked with Dixon, who looped a wide pass out to Jones on the wing. His pace did the rest, and Dixon’s conversion gave Brecon a 30-point lead.

The game was effectively over but there was time for a great, cameo Iestyn Phillips run and a genuine Llangennech fight back which brought tries for number eight Jordan Saunders and winger Callum Woolley, and a deserved bonus point for the losing team.

However, Dixon had the final say, landing a long-range penalty to cap a fine win.

This result bolsters Brecon’s confidence ahead of Pontypridd’s first ever visit to Parc de Pugh on Saturday, March 29.
