Brecon secured a hard-fought one-point victory over Newbridge in a thrilling match at Parc de Pugh.
Brecon 32 – Newbridge 31
The two teams have met frequently over the past five seasons, with Newbridge holding the upper hand, having won six of the last eight matchups, including league and cup victories earlier this season.
Nine tries were scored on this occasion, and the lead changed hands five times, before Brecon eventually clinched the win.
Brecon started strongly, spending much of the opening period in Newbridge’s half. Despite creating several opportunities, Brecon was unable to convert early pressure into points due to a combination of small errors and solid Newbridge defence.
The first try came after a Newbridge error, with Brecon pouncing on the mistake. A Brecon kick and chase put the Newbridge receiver under pressure, causing him to drop the ball. Tomos Davies gathered, passing to Tom Richards, who in turn fed wing Chad Davies to race away and score under the posts. James Dixon converted, but despite one more successful penalty from Dixon, Brecon’s kickers struggled, leaving Newbridge's Robbie Turley to shine with a perfect kicking record, including four conversions and a penalty.
Newbridge responded quickly, levelling the score with a try following a line-out and a well-executed maul. Scrum-half Iestyn Martin Lloyd darted around an unguarded blindside to score, with Turley converting.
The game continued to swing back and forth. Brecon’s front row, prop Chris Phillips and hooker Geraint Clarke, were key in defence and attack, but Newbridge capitalised on an error, turning the ball over and scoring from a counter-attack. Centre Sam Watkins broke through the defence and set up wing Cian Jones for the try, with Turley adding the conversion. Newbridge held a seven-point lead after 30 minutes.
Brecon hit back with a successful penalty from Dixon and then claimed the lead just before half-time with a well-worked try. Logan McIntosh won a turnover penalty before Brecon kicked for touch and won clean ball. Tomos Davies made the break before feeding captain Ioan Edwards, who continued the attack. Richards then stepped the full-back to score.
In the second half, Brecon second-row Callum Bradbury claimed brilliantly at the kick-off. After a strong run from Joel Price, Brecon mounted a sustained attack, with Richards crossing for his second try of the evening to put Brecon ahead - his fifth try in two matches.
Newbridge responded with a penalty kick from Turley and a brilliant try by centre Sam Watkins, who chipped the Brecon defence and regathered before setting up the score.
But Brecon hit back, with the pack driving over the line and McIntosh scoring to put Brecon back in front by one point.
With Newbridge growing increasingly frustrated, Brecon continued to dominate and forced their opponents deep into their half. A penalty try, awarded after Newbridge pulled down a maul near the line, gave Brecon a two-score advantage.
Newbridge fought valiantly until the final whistle, winning a scrum penalty and taking play to the Brecon 22. Centre Josh Thomas sliced through the Brecon defence to score with the final play of the match. Turley’s conversion ensured Newbridge earned two bonus points for scoring four tries and losing by less than seven points.
It was a fitting end to an enthralling game, with Brecon claiming a bonus point victory over Newbridge.
