Talgarth Town have been enjoying their first season since forming last summer and joining the South Wales Women's and Girls League last summer.

The Royals had previously played under the Hay St Mary's banner in the Herefordshire FA Women's League, after the Forest Road club initially formed a women's team in 2014, before taking the decision to move down the road and switch to the Welsh pyramid.

The Royals are just one of two women's teams currently playing in Brecon and Radnorshire despite the growth of the sport amongst females over recent years. Penybont United continue to play their football on the other side of Offa's Dyke following the collapse of the North Powys League in 2016.

With the South Wales Women's and Girls League accepting a host of new clubs last summer, a mini group-based competition was played during September and October, which would decide the constitution of the lower three sections below the Premier Division.

Talgarth Town started their Group D fixtures with narrow defeats to Undy (1-2) and Wattsville (5-6) before recording their first competitive victory of the season following a 5-4 home success over Abertillery Bluebells. The Royals suffered a 5-0 reverse at Coed Duon before bouncing back to enjoy a 5-0 home win over Goytre Development at the King George V Playing Fields.

Following the completion of the initial phase, the Breconshire club were placed in the middle of the three divisions, and opened their Second Division campaign with a 7-0 home win over Sully Sports following a hat-trick from Kirsty Rea and additional goals from Jade Maddy, Sophie Combstock, Catrin Davies and Tara Fitzgerald.

The Royals suffered a 4-2 reverse on the road at Pontypridd, despite a Jade Maddy Brace for the visitors, before recording a 2-2 home draw with Barry Athletic after Caitlin O'Shea's second goal rescued a point for the Breconshire club.

Talgarth Town took a break from league action to thump Rogerstone 11-0 at the King George V Playing Fields in the Alun Evans Cup. Maddy and Ella Barker both netted hat-tricks for the hosts and were joined by Lucy Belcher (two), Katie Nutter, Rea and Combstock.

The Royals started 2025 with a 7-0 victory at Rogerstone in the league, courtesy of goals from Rea (two), Belcher, Maddy, Combstock, O'Shea and Belcher, before sharing six goals to draw with Porth Harlequins on home turf the following week with Combstock (two) and Rea on target.

The Breconshire club commenced February with a 5-1 victory at Abertillery Bluebells, courtesy of a Rea treble and further strikes from O'Shea and Molly watts, before enjoying a 4-2 home success over Barry Athletic seven days later with an O'Shea hat-trick and a Rea strike.

The Royals saw their run in the Alun Evans Cup come to an end on penalties after their match at AFC Llwydcoed finished 3-3 after 90 minutes despite a brace from O'Shea and a single strike from Watts. Talgarth Town bounced back to enjoy a 3-1 victory on the road at Sully Sports, following goals from Maddy (two) and Watts, to record a double over their opponents from the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Breconshire club's most recent outing on Sunday saw them play out a goalless draw with nearest rivals Pontypridd at the King George V Playing Fields. The remaining months of the campaign appear to be full of promise for the Royals under the leadership of manager Tom Bevan, who had previously managed Hay St Mary's, and he explained that the move to Welsh football has helped to attract new playing personnel.

The south Powys club sit proudly top of the Second Division table after completing the first-half of their league fixtures, sitting a single point clear of Pontypridd, but having played two more matches than their rivals. It would be an impressive feat if Talgarth Town were to achieve promotion at the conclusion of their first season playing in the Welsh domestic system.
