Ysgol Calon Cymru have reached the final of the Welsh Schools Rugby Union Vase.
The final is taking place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff which has been postponed until March.
This year is the first time that the school, which has campuses in Builth and Llandrindod, has entered the WSRU league system at U18 level. The team has performed to a high standard all season, remaining unbeaten to date.
Entering the East Wales North league, the boys from Ysgol Calon Cymru faced Ysgol Bryncelynnog in their opening encounter, winning 19-0, following a friendly fixture against Crickhowell where they were dominant in a 43-12 victory. Two more wins followed against Rhydywaun (12-5) and Garth Olwg (22-5) left them top of the league with a 100% record and a 43 point advantage.
In Mid -October, Ysgol Calon Cymru were placed in the WSRU Vase competition, the competitions entitled the Road to the Principality, as the final of each competition would be held at the famous Cardiff landmark. This competition now became a knock out format. The first round opposition being a local Powys derby against Crickhowell. The team carried on their good form with a resounding 43-5 win. The next round was against St Cenydd from Caerphilly. A high scoring game finished with a 55-26 victory for the Mid Wales outfit.
Ysgol Calon Cymru, now found themselves in unprecedented territory in the semi-finals of a national competition, against another set of opponents, they had previously faced this season; Garth Olwg from Church Village. The game was held at Llandrindod Wells RFC, in very testing weather conditions.
The game ebbed and flowed throughout and both teams performed to a very high standard, displaying courage, effort and no little skill, even when the heavens opened and the game was lit up by passing thunder and lightning.
Ysgol Calon Cymru took the early initiative with a try by Iwan Holder, which was unconverted. Garth Olwg fought back with a try of their own, again going unconverted.
Both teams enjoyed periods of pressure and possession, but it was Ysgol Calon Cymru who took the initiative with a further try by centre Holder, this time Ciaran Price slotted the conversion to send the boys in red into half time 12- 5 in the lead. As conditions deteriorated control of the ball became important, Ysgol Calon Cymru were very good in this regard, just allowing a loss of control at crucial times on the Garth Olwg tryline.
Pressure eventually paid with some driving play between forwards and backs allowing winger Deri Mason to touch down between the posts, extended the lead to 19-5, sealed with the successful conversion by Ceiran Price.
Under late Garth Olwg pressure, Ysgol Calon Cymru showed heart and courage to defend their line manfully. A late Garth Olwg try didn’t dampen the spirits of The Calon Cymru boys, who held on for a momentous victory.
A spokesperson for the school said: “The team, the school and the community look forward to the final at the Principality Stadium, which has been postponed until the start of March.”
