A successful collaboration between the New Inn Talgarth and Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTSR) raised funds to provide school uniforms for disadvantaged children in Dhampus, Nepal, while also supporting HBTSR’s Welcome Days for the year ahead.
However, the event, held at Llangorse Community Centre, was about much more than just raising money - it was a chance for the community to connect, share stories, learn about Nepal and sanctuary-seeking, enjoy delicious food, and have an unforgettable evening.
When Khusiman Gurung MVO approached HBTSR with the idea for a shared fundraising event, the goal wasn’t necessarily to raise a large sum, but to create an opportunity for supporters to gather. The food was guaranteed to be excellent, and tickets sold quickly. Items were generously donated for a raffle and auction, adding to the excitement.
The New Inn staff, members of HBTSR, Khusiman and his family worked together to transform the hall with vibrant decorations, including prayer flags that added a special touch. Melrose East coordinated seating to ensure groups could sit together, while Ord Quarrel worked her raffle magic, raising over £330. Kate Reid and her family ran the bar throughout the night, and the New Inn staff served up a generous and delicious three-course meal.
Throughout the evening, scenes from Nepal and HBTSR Welcome Days played on screens, accompanied by traditional Nepalese music. A Nepalese dance demonstration was particularly well-received, with the colourful costumes and athletic performances drawing enthusiastic praise. A quiz on Nepal and sanctuary-seeking helped inform guests and sparked lively discussion.

Each table was given an auction item, and the chosen auctioneers exceeded reserve prices for all items. The highlight of the auction was a performance featuring a shawl, which was expertly modelled as the auctioneer convinced the audience they couldn’t possibly live without it. Laughter and fun were in abundance, making the evening truly memorable.

In total, £2,400 was raised, which will be shared between the two causes. This fantastic result will ensure that children in Dhampus will receive school uniforms, and HBTSR will be able to fund transport for at least two popular Welcome Day outings.
