Powys County Council is encouraging local communities to apply for free road closures to host street parties in celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
This year marks a significant milestone in history, as May 8 will commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe. As part of the national celebrations, communities across Powys are invited to come together in a shared moment of reflection and festivity, with events taking place between Thursday, May 8 and Sunday, May 11, 2025.
The council is offering free road closures to support local groups wishing to organise street parties, allowing people to mark this momentous occasion in the heart of their neighbourhoods.
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “Applying for a closure for a street party would normally attract an administration fee but the council has once again decided to waive the fee to help communities celebrate this important anniversary.
“We would encourage everyone to come together and plan some fun street parties to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. These shared moments of celebration are great ways to keep the memories alive, pay homage to those involved in WWII and create strong and vibrant communities.”
