A quad bike run in Mid Wales has raised more than £1,200 for Guide Dogs Cymru.

The event was organised by Nigel Gethin of Builth Wells, whose wife Heather is the owner of golden retriever guide dog Farley, and Gareth Davies of Llandrindod Wells, whose son Mason has been honoured by Guide Dogs Cymru as a prolific young fundraiser for the charity.

An incredible total of £1,285 has been raised for the cause.

The run began at Llanelwedd, with 48 quad bikes taking part over five hours. The 38-mile route was almost entirely off-road and took the riders from Breconshire into Radnorshire and back, visiting several places of interest along the way. Among them was Twm Tobacco's Grave on Llandeilo Hill, said to be the final resting place of a well-loved packman or travelling salesman.

Mr Gethin said: “I took the riders to the grave to have a look and everyone was really interested. We were lucky with the fine weather because it had been foggy earlier."

It's not a race, so we stopped at different points to chat and take in the views," he said.

Guide dog Farley was on hand to see the riders off at the start and Mason Davies rode on the back of Mr Gethin’s two-seater quad bike.

Entry cost £20 per bike plus £10 for a passenger, and the total easily surpassed the £700 raised by last year’s charity event - a 48-vehicle tractor run.

Ruth Evans, Community Fundraising Development Manager for Guide Dogs Cymru, said: “Once again, the Mid Wales community has come together to support Guide Dogs, a charity close to their hearts.

"People recognise the difference that guide dog Farley has made to his owner, and this money will help to fund the life-changers of the future.”
