Builth Wells were knocked out of the JD Welsh Cup and Brecon Corries suffered a heavy league defeat over the weekend.

JD WELSH CUP

Builth Wells are out of this season’s JD Welsh Cup after a 7-2 defeat at Buckley Town. It was always going to be a big ask for The Bulls against a side in the top six of the JD Cymru (North) and they did not have the best preparation with kick off delayed after encountering traffic problems.

Builth played well but came up against a quality Buckley outfit who were just so clinical.

The Bulls conceded early on with Daniel Holland scoring for Buckley and Bradley Knight then struck twice for the hosts. Danny Ives reduced the deficit capitalising on a goalkeeping error and Tommy Rowlands was taken out when through on goal but Buckley goalkeeper, Ryan Goldston was shown a yellow card when even the home bench thought it should have been red. And Buckley went straight down the other end with Knight competing a first half hat-trick.

Rhys Edwards increased their lead early in the second half with his first touch but Builth then enjoyed a good spell. Substitute, Alex Hicks pulled one back from close range from a Jamie Evans cross and Rowlands failed to hit the target after again going through. Buckley player-manager, Asa Hamilton came off the bench to score twice and complete a deserved win although the margin of which possibly flattered the home side.

The two remaining teams from the MMP Central Wales League were paired together and Llanrhaeadr won 4-0 at Carno whose defeat was their first of the season. Will Roberts-Morris netted in the first half and Billy Clarke, James Burgess and Gruff Evans sealed Llanrhaeadr’s passage after the break.

Caersws eased to a 5-0 home success over Cefn Albion going in front through a Josh Millington own goal before Josh Astley (2), Dillon Browne and a screamer from Jamie Jones completed the nap hand.

Penrhyncoch are also through with goals from Cameron Allen and Daniel Owen enough to defeat Talysarn Celts 2-1 in a close encounter at Cae Baker.

Brickfield Rangers lost for the first time this season beaten 3-1 at Kinmel Bay meaning Llangollen Town and Llanuwchllyn are the only remaining sides from the Ardal League North East in the Welsh Cup. Vinnie Cooke and Louie Middlehurst guided Llangollen to a 2-0 win at St Asaph City and goals from John Evans and Will Owen saw Llanuwchllyn triumph 2-1 at Penmaenmawr Phoenix where they had Warren Aykroyd-Duckett sent off.

ARDAL LEAGUE SOUTH EAST

Brecon Corries slipped to third in the Ardal League South East following a disappointing 5-1 defeat at Canton who scored four unanswered goals in the second half. Corries had taken the lead with captain and central defender, Dale Evans netting his second league goal of the term on the half hour. Brian Camilleri immediately levelled for Canton and the teams headed into the second half with everything to play for.

But Chris Dye put Canton ahead on 64 minutes and Abdoulie Tunkara extended the lead before a late double from substitute, Andre Phillips made it back-to-back away defeats for The Chisels.

Canton move above Corries into second spot in the league table while Treowen Stars are top with Chris Hartland bagging a hat-trick and Leigh Sharpe scoring twice in a convincing 5-0 victory at Croesyceiliog.

Abergavenny Town saw the one unbeaten record in the division go as they lost 1-0 at Abercarn whose Alex Adams scored the only goal from the penalty spot.

There was better news for Corries Youth team on Sunday as they defeated Abergavenny Town 4-2 at The Rich Field. Oliver Powell took just two minutes to put Corries ahead but the visitors hit back to lead 2-1 at half-time through Zach Duke and Spencer Meringolo. Corries however finished the game strongly and Mitchell Davies scored twice before Craig Evans, one of the permitted overage players in the side, broke from halfway to complete the win.

ARDAL LEAGUE NORTH EAST

Radnor Valley backed up their draw against high flying Brickfield Rangers the previous week with a 3-2 victory at Chirk AAA in the Ardal League North East on Sunday. A look at the league table suggested it was a game Radnor needed to win and they did with goals from Jack Clarke, Joey Price and Elliot Morris.

It was Chirk who struck first with Brad Pearce netting a free-kick on 26 minutes but The Goats scored twice just before half-time. Jack Clarke equalised after 42 minutes and Joey Price took Radnor ahead from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time when Chirk ‘keeper, Callum Taylor fouled Charlie Beaumont. Elliot Morris popped up with his first goal of the season midway through the second half after Taylor spilled a Joey Price free-kick but Radnor still had work to do when Tom Freeman grabbed a second for Chirk eight minutes from time.

Radnor’s win moves them above local rivals, Llandrindod Wells who lost 3-1 at Penycae who have emerged as the season’s surprise package. The Wrexham area side went into the game having won five from five and make that six from six as a hat-trick from Zac Davies downed the Spa men who travelled with a bare 11.

Davies broke the deadlock on the half hour but Llandrindod had opportunities with Kieran McCarey and central defenders, Ashley Jones and Shaun Nicholls failing to convert from set pieces. A defensive mix-up gifted Davies a second for Penycae just moments before half-time.

Llandrindod turned in a spirited second half showing, again creating chances, but Davies completed his hat-trick for Penycae before Zak Baker gained a consolation for Llandrindod finishing well from the edge of the box.

Manager-less Bow Street remain a point ahead at the top of the table with Rhys Hughes making it back to back hat-tricks in a 7-0 victory over Llanidloes Town. Steff Davies, Callum Page, Sion Ewart and Richie Ricketts shared the other goals.

Llanfair United’s early season promise continued with a fine 2-1 win at Dolgellau where player-manager, Karl Seliaerts again proved his worth to the club with both goals before Gerwyn Williams pulled one back for Dolgellau who hit the bar three times.

In the day’s other league match, Kerry slumped to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of lowly Rhos Aelwyd. Scott Reeves scored twice for the North Wales men early in the second half with Mark Hughes reducing the deficit for Kerry who had Matt Mumford sent off late in the game.

Brickfield Rangers’ Gareth Wilson has been named as the Ardal League North East manager of the Month for August.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUE

Builth Wells Reserves caused a shock in the MMP Central Wales League Cup by knocking high flying Knighton Town out of the competition. In the one first round tie, Builth prevailed 4-2 at Bryn-y-Castell last Tuesday night thanks largely to a second half hat-trick from Tommy Rowlands to book a second round tie at Rhayader Town.

After a goalless first half, Rowlands rounded keeper, Nick Cadwallader to give Builth a lead which was cancelled out by Declan Beddoes. Two headed goals in four minutes from Rowlands and Kejan Foryszewski stunned Knighton and although Callum Stead pulled one back, Rowlands completed his hat-trick to see Builth through.

In the MMP Central Wales League (South) Rhayader Town returned to winning ways in midweek with a 1-0 home success over Caersws Development. Sion Herman netted the all important goal for Rhayader three minutes into the second half to give The Red Kites the spoils which move them up to third in the league table.

Caersws felt they deserved something from the game and The Bluebirds went on to claim their second win of the season on Friday night hammering local rivals, Llanidloes Town Reserves 13-1 away. Callum Francis-Jones led the way with a hat-trick and there were two goals each for Ryan Cook and Jared Marks. Will Evans, Jake Jones, Kaiden Mahon, Will Lister, Ashley Harries and a Ryan George own goal completed the tally with Finn Gaca gaining a consolation for The Daffs who have now conceded fifty-eight goals in seven starts.

In the North division, Tommy Jones snatched a late winner to earn Berriew a 2-1 midweek victory over Abermule. Charlie Humphreys had put Abermule ahead in first half stoppage time but John Lloyd levelled early in the second half before Jones stuck in the 92nd minute.

Berriew then went down 3-1 at home against Welshpool Town on Friday night. Liam Howard gave them the lead but Ricky Litchfield, Teilo Gittins-Turner and Joe Cadwallader replied for Welshpool who returned to winning ways.

Abermule picked up a point in a 2-2 draw with Montgomery Town on Saturday. Michel Humphreys and Tom Davies netted for ‘Mule with Jack Williams scoring both Montgomery goals.

EMRYS MORGAN CUP

Knighton Town blasted their way into the third round of the Emrys Morgan Cup with an emphatic 11-0 victory at local rivals, Penybont United. The Radnor Robins bounced back from their midweek defeat in the League Cup to put Penybont to the sword with the day’s biggest win. Taylor Wozencraft gave Knigton the lead and three goals in as many minutes from Luke Boundford, with his first for the cub, Declan Beddoes and Henry Shaw all but ended the tie. Callum Stead added a fifth before half-time and the goals kept coming after the break. Shaw and Stead went on to complete hat-tricks, Wozencraft bagged his second and veteran substitute, Wayne Davies also got in on the act.

Talgarth Town beat former Mid Wales League (South) rivals, 6-1, while Presteigne St Andrews are also through after their scheduled opponents, Newcastle Emlyn conceded. Rhayader Town were due to meet Brecon FC last night (Tuesday) while the Hay St Marys v Felinfach tie will be played this weekend with the referee calling that off at the last minutes on Saturday due to a continuous downpour.

Llandrindod Wells Reserves made the long trip to Bargod Rangers and bowed out following a narrow 3-2 defeat. Ethan Furness gave the hosts a lead which was cancelled out by Liam Daniels before half-time. Rhydian Davies and a second for Furness put Bargod in the driving seat but Llandrindod set up a tense finish with Jago Mackenzie reducing the arrears.

The Emrys Morgan Cup used to be one that all lower league clubs looked forward to but it appears to have lost its attraction with local teams, Builth Wells Reserves, Felindre and St Harmon all conceding second round ties on Saturday as did Crannog, Llangedwyn, Newcastle Emlyn and Meifod, the latter who have unfortunately pulled out of the MMP Central Wales League (North).

Waterloo Rovers, beaten finalists last season, triumphed 4-0 at Talybont with second half goals from Adam Gough, Owain Richards Luke Evans and Nick Roberts and Four Crosses were also 4-0 winners at Tywyn Bryncrug with Jordan Dean grabbing a hat-trick.

Forden United thumped Machynlleth 7-0 thanks to Jamie Clewlow (2), Josh Lenc (2), Jake O’Donnell (2) and Alistair Williams. Greg Pryce completed a transfer from Abermule to Trewern United late in the week and scored twice as his new side beat Kerry Reserves 4-1 with Callum Pain and Gareth Mansell also on target.

Lee Morgan and Nathan Penberthy both netted twice as Penparcau progressed with a 5-1 win against Borth United and Penrhyncoch Reserves won 5-1 at Trefonen with Harley Lawton scoring twice while Ciaran Evans got his first goal for the club. Bleddyn Jones proved the match winner for Ffostrasol who pipped Dewi Stars 1-0, Guto Roberts and Osian Williams saw Llanilar through 2-1 against Llechryd but Bont were beaten 4-1 at home by Lampeter Town.

JD CYMRU PREMIER

Newtown looked on course for a third win in a row in the JD Cymru Premier  but had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw at Bala Town on Friday night. Aaron Williams and Jason Oswell had seen The Robins open up a two goal lead but Aeron Edwards pulled one back in first half stoppage time before Nathan Peate headed an 80th minute equaliser.

Aberystwyth Town look as if they will be embroiled in another relegation battle after being beaten 3-0 at home by Haverfordwest – their fifth straight league defeat – while the biggest shout of the week-end went to leaders, Penybont who beat The New Saints 2-1 with Chris Venables getting off the substitute’s bench to net the winner and end TNS’s long unbeaten run.
