More than 100 people turned out on Saturday night, March 8, for this year’s Reclaim the Night walk in Brecon.
The event promotes safer streets for all and was part of this year’s Brecon Women’s Festival.
Alive and Kickin’ Choir kicked off the proceedings, singing some traditional marching songs at the Canal Basin outside Theatr Brycheiniog, where the march would begin.
The march through the town was then led by Japanese Drummers Joe Daggart and Ursula Frank. There were a few stops built in on the way with more songs to be sung.
Lady Kathryn Silk, High Sheriff of Powys, gave an address at the start of the March about her year of raising awareness of violence against women and girls. Everyone joining the march wore a black ribbon in remembrance of women who have lost their lives because of male violence.
The ribbons were made by Carol Kay who is currently exhibiting in the ‘Threads’ exhibition at Found Gallery. Carol also gave an address at the Muse following the March.
Cllr Liz Rijnenberg, Chair of the Reclaim the Night steering group, said: “We were delighted to have Cllr John Powell, Mayor of Brecon, and Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader of Powys County Council joining the walk.
“This March is a wonderful example of how Brecon and our surrounding communities come together to rally on important issues. We know that safety on our streets is a matter for everyone and we were pleased to see people of all genders and backgrounds on the March. The focus was on the safety of Women and Girls as part of International Women’s Day, and Brecon’s Women’s Festival.
“I would like to express my thanks to our steering group and all those who contributed to the March.”
