Drivers in Brecon are being urged to follow the new one-way system on Free Street after reports of vehicles travelling the wrong way since the change was introduced in October.

Powys County Council says motorists have been heading north from the Watton to Heol Gouesnou, against the flow of traffic, despite road signs being in place.

A council spokesperson said: “We urge drivers to obey these road signs. Ignoring them puts both themselves and others at risk.”

The one-way system was introduced to address safety concerns for pedestrians on narrow footways and protect infrastructure. Two-way traffic, including large buses, frequently damaged a narrow section of channel drain, loosening covers and causing noise disturbances for residents.

The change aims to prevent Free Street from being used as a shortcut.

The council acknowledged that road markings are still needed but stressed that road signs are in place and drivers must comply with the new rules.

The change followed a public consultation earlier this year, which received more objections than support.

"If they [drivers] are caught by the police, drivers also risk receiving a fine and points on their licence - this could be more serious if they cause a collision,” warned the council.

Road markings are expected to be added shortly.
