Pen y Fan has been named one of the best places to watch the sunset in the UK and Ireland.

The peak – the highest in South Wales - ranking seventh in a new list compiled by Auto Trader.

Pen y Fan earned its place thanks to a combination of stunning views, social media popularity, and strong online reviews. With sweeping vistas across the mountains and beyond, it has long been a favourite with hikers and photographers.

According to Auto Trader’s analysis, it boasts more than 192,000 Instagram posts and 38,000 monthly Google searches, and holds an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 on review platform AllTrails.

The ranking is part of a broader trend in outdoor travel, with sunset hikes growing increasingly popular. Searches for “best sunset spots” on TikTok have more than doubled in the past year, while hiking-related posts in the UK now exceed 26 million on the platform.

Auto Trader examined more than 50 well-known viewpoints across the UK and Ireland, using data from social media, weather patterns, Google search trends and online reviews to create the final list.

Topping the chart was Durdle Door in Dorset, followed by Stonehenge and Beachy Head. Pen y Fan’s strong social media presence and high review scores helped it outperform other well-loved locations such as the Giant’s Causeway and Corfe Castle.

Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader, said the findings reflect a growing appreciation for the UK’s natural beauty: “The UK and Ireland boast beautiful scenery, making sunset hikes increasingly popular. This growing trend on social media has led to a significant surge of interest in visiting these locations.
