Following the final matches of the season on Thursday, March 13, at the Radnorshire Indoor Bowling Stadium in Llandrindod Wells, The Cobblers clinched the Veterans League title, writes Clive Barrett.

Their victory came after a decisive win over the Spartans in the last game of the season,

Last year’s champions, the Builth Bulls, put up a strong defence of their title but ultimately finished as runners-up.

The trophy for this league was generously donated several years ago in memory of their father, the late Councillor Walter Rogers, by his daughters, Annette Barrett and Dorothy Moseley.

This year, the cup was presented by Mr Cliff Jones, a long-time family friend, who shared that his mother and Mrs Rogers, the wife of Councillor Rogers, were best friends. He went on to add that Mr Rogers was himself an accomplished sportsman, and in the 1934/35 season, he proudly served as the captain of the Llandrindod Wells Football team, which won the North Herefordshire League Sportsmanship Cup for that year. Cliff Jones (senior), the speaker’s father, was also a member of that successful team.

The photo shows Cliff Jones presenting the Walter Rogers Memorial Cup to Roger Cobb, the captain of the Cobblers.

Others in the photo (left to right) are: Steve Farey, John Rees, Dave Wilshere, Martin Hunt. Then the Builth Bulls team of Sue Francis, Ken Francis, Rob Wall (captain) Shirley King, John James, Brian Jones (organiser) and Geoff Lawrence. Clive Marshall was unable to be present.

The buffet which followed the presentation was arranged by Brian Jones, and served by Lynda Blythe and her Indoor Centre caterers.

The indoor stadium is located in the heart of Llandrindod Wells and provides facilities for playing, coaching, and learning the game of bowls. They have six rinks available, with a specialist carpet surface.
