Knighton Town went nine points clear in the Central Wales League and Talgarth hit 10 goals in a cup tie.

ARDAL LEAGUE NORTH EAST

Radnor Valley followed up their victory over Dolgellau the previous week by holding Ardal North East League leaders, Bow Street to a goalless draw at The Bypass.

There might not have been any goals but there were chances, well certainly half chances, at both ends in what was a competitive 90 minutes. Radnor, who have now lost just one of their last five in the league, were boosted by the return of midfielder, Thomas Edwards following a brief spell with Newtown while Bow Street included new signing, Taylor Watts who joined from their local rivals, Penrhyncoch in the week.

Callum Matthews went close for Radnor in the first half after being slipped in by Edwards while visiting keeper, Lewis James pulled off the save of the match from Charlie Beaumont and also denied Lewis Morris. Bow Street topscorer, Rhys Hughes did get the ball in the net at the other end from a Callum Page cross but the effort was rightly ruled out for offside.

Radnor had a good spell at the start of the second half and Callum Matthews had an opening but delayed his shot. Joey Price brought a save out of James after breaking through and then had another half chance when Beaumont crossed. But the best opening of the afternoon fell to the visitors’ Rhys Hughes who latched on to a long free-kick from keeper, James and should really have scored after rounding Otto Jones but Henry Shipley, part of an impressive Radnor back four, made a splendid last ditch block. Matthews hammered a shot into the side netting for Radnor whose Jones saved a header from substitute, Tom Williams but the sides had to settle for a point apiece.

Builth Wells also picked up a creditable point in a 2-2 draw at Llangollen Town which was probably a fair result. Builth took an early lead with Jamie Evans outjumping the home defence to head in a Lyndon Jones cross. Jones himself had an opportunity after making room for himself and Aeron Powell missed another chance.

But where Builth had edged the first half, Llangollen were definitely the better side in the second period and equalised 10 minutes after half-time with Louie Middlehurst capitalising on a defensive mix-up. Topscorer, Ben Wilson put Llangollen ahead on 70 minutes tapping in a right wing cross and Builth did well to get back in the game after that. The returning Tommy Rowlands scored his 13th league goal of the term from the penalty spot when substitute, Danny Hall was brought down and both sides could have gone on to win it late on.

Llandrindod Wells fell to a 2-1 defeat against Dolgellau on The Broadway. Defences held the upper hand in a goalless first half before the visitors took the lead just after the hour mark with Osian Morris heading in Dennis Bates’ pinpoint cross. Soon after Dolgellau got a second with Morris and Bates combining for Will Grufydd to net at the far post. Gavin Rowlands reduced the deficit with 14 minutes remaining to give Llandrindod a chance but Dolgellau saw the game out.

Kerry are up to second after a comfortable 4-1 home win against Cefn Albion with Neil Mitchell, Richard Davies and Barry Bellis on target after a Nathan Williams own goal had set The Lambs on their way.

Llanidloes Town picked up a surprise point at Brickfield Rangers where it finished 1-1 with a stunning effort from ex-Rhayader Town defender, Keegan Bradley putting The Daffs back on terms after Isaac Dawson had given Rangers a 74th-minute lead.

Llanfair United drew 2-2 at home with Penycae with Nyasha Mwamuka giving them an interval lead. Callum Smith and Osian Williams hit back for Penycae, who had started the day in second spot in the table, but Sam Jones levelled for Llanfair who saw player-manager, Karl Seliaerts sent off with eight minutes remaining.

Llanuwchllyn, with games in hand, were the day’s topscorers, winning 8-1 at Chirk AAA with Meilir Williams scoring five times in the first half. Ilan Hughes, Sam Dolben and Gwydion Roberts were also on the scoresheet after Tom Freeman had given Chirk the lead.

The Llansantffraid Village v Rhos Aelwyd game was abandoned due to a serious head injury with Rhos leading 2-0 thanks to Luke Williams and Ryan Jenkins.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUE

Knighton Town extended their lead at the top of the MMP Central Wales League (South) to nine points with a 2-0 win at Bow Street Reserves.

Knighton were on top for much of the game but Bow Street keeper, Ryan Burr made a string of fine saves to keep them at bay.

Luke Boundford finally broke the deadlock for The Radnor Robins after 71 minutes, heading his first first league goal for the club with Declan Beddoes the provider. And within two minutes Knighton struck again with Taylor Wozencraft heading home another Beddoes cross for his eighth of the season.

Knighton, who have now won 11 from 11 in the league, really have emerged as title favourites although there is still a long way to go and they had the opportunity to move even further ahead at the top on Monday night when they were due to host Aberystwyth University.

Hay St Marys, who have now played eight of their nine league games at home, slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Penrhyncoch Reserves. It was a much improved performance from The Saints who were undone when Harley Lawton netted for Penrhyn from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

In the day’s only other league game, Tregaron took the opportunity to go second with a 7-2 success over Caersws Development. Paul James and Aled Osian Morgan twice put Tregaron ahead in the first half but Callum Francis-Jones and Jack Jones replied for The Bluebirds to leave it 2-2 at half-time. Tregaron, who are the division’s topscorers, then ran away with it after the break with goals from Shon Morgans (2), Ryan Davies (2) and Josh Davies.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUE CUP

Presteigne St Andrews had every reason to celebrate on Friday night as they won for the first time this season. After nine defeats and a draw, the East Radnor side finally tasted that winning feeling after beating Llanidloes Town Reserves 2-1 in the second round of the MMP Central Wales League Cup. Presteigne had been targetting a win against their fellow strugglers and made the best possible start with Niall Rhodes netting after just two minutes. Aaron Macken put Llanidloes level before half-time but substitute, Sezar Cakmak got the game’s vital third goal for Presteigne, whose keeper, Jordan Bailey made a couple of excellent late saves to keep the lead intact.

Rhayader Town are also through to the last 16 following a narrow 2-1 verdict over Builth Wells Reserves in a tie which could have gone either way. Ciaran Price made the breakthrough for Rhayader with his third goal in as many games on 42 minutes and Jacob Jones added a crucial second in first half stoppage time. Rhayader might have extended their lead after the break but Builth came back into it and Ollie Woods pulled one back on 77 minutes to raise their hopes.

Penybont are out of the League Cup after being beaten 5-0 at home by Bishops Castle. The Polecats were very much in the tie in the first half before Mark Griffiths and Aidan Oakley netted for Castle in the 10 minutes leading up to half-time. Oakley got his second on 55 minutes and late efforts from Josh Collins and Dylan Powell completed the nap hand.

Penparcau also scored five triumphing 5-1 at Llanilar through Gytis Pivnickas, Lee Morgan (2), Anthony Evans and Mikey Gornall. Guto Roberts netted for Llanilar, who had Ioan Jones and Ryan Hopkins sent off in the first half.

There were five too for Machynlleth with Calum Humphreys a hat-trick man in their 5-1 win over Dyffryn Banw where Liam Sully and Alfie Westwood got the other goals.

There were fewer goals elsewhere with three of the day’s ties producing just three goals. Luke Evans scored after 10 minutes and that was enough for Ffostrasol to go through 1-0 at Bont. A second half penalty from Jacob Edwards saw Llanrhaeadr triumph 1-0 at Barmouth while substitute, Ross Harris netted two minutes from time to give Forden United their passage against Abermule. Forden however finished with 10 men with Jake O’Donnell sent off.

Welshpool Town defeated Four Crosses on penalties after their tie ended at 2-2 after 90 minutes. Jordan Dean and Rob Weir twice put Crosses ahead but Ricky Litchfield and topscorer, Ethan Kinsey forced the shoot-out.

Carno maintained their good form with Geraint Jones (2) and Josh Hartrick their marksmen in a 3-1 win at Llanfyllin Town who replied through Josh Norwood.

Berriew booked the remaining place in the third round of the Emrys Morgan Cup with a 5-0 victory at Aberystwyth University. Former Felindre striker, Jake Meredith scored twice with Liam Howard, Spencer Roberts and an own goal making up the tally.

CYMRU LEAGUES

Newtown made a timely return to winning ways in the JD Cymru Premier with Josh Lock and Rob Evans netting in a 2-1 victory at Caernarfon Town.

Aberystwyth Town’s struggles continue and they lost 3-0 at home against Penybont who, as a result, extend their lead at the top to seven points.

Aberyswyth are rooted to the foot of the table following nine straight league defeats and are currently without a manager following the resignation of Anthony “Taff” Williams with Dave Taylor in interim charge.

Caersws had a good day in the JD Cymru North with a fine 3-0 home success over Buckley Town. Craig Harris and Sam Phillips put The Bluebirds two up at the break and Max McLaughlin completed the win early in the second half.

Guilsfield crashed to their biggest defeat for some time, beaten 5-0 at home by Colwyn Bay whose Gwion Dafydd scored four and Penrhyncoch went down 3-1 at home against Ruthin Town with Tom Evans gaining The Roosters a late consolation.

Kyle O’Shea netted four time as Talgarth Town blasted their way into the next round of the Candour Talent Gwent Open Cup with a 10-0 thrashing of Usk Town Reserves. Tom Francis scored twice and Harry Sharman also netted a brace as well as missing a penalty with Bean Warry and Fraser McAnally taking Talgarth into double figures.

Felindre are still looking for their first win in the JT Hughes Montgomery Amateur League following a goalless draw at home against Llanfair United Reserves while there were defeats for Newcastle and St Harmon.

Newcastle will be kicking themselves after surrendering a three-goal lead at Llanfechain. Morgan Oakley (2) and Tom Price (pen) put the Shropshire side three up but Llanfechain hit back with Abba Salihi and Gary Meredith each scoring twice.

St Harmon twice led at home against Kerry Reserves through Gregg Lloyd and Ollie Leadbetter but a more experienced Kerry went on to win 4-2 thanks to Tommy Burlinson (2), Ryan Groves and Jack Carroll.

Hay St Marys suffered their biggest defeat to date in the RTM Brickwork Merthyr League going down 7-0 at Gurnos FC Seniors.
