Brecon Corries swept into the second round of the Ardal Southern League Cup with a fantastic 6-0 win at Treharris Athletic.

ARDAL SOUTHERN LEAGUE CUP

Corries maintained their blistering start to the season with goals from Matty Tong (2), Craig Evans, Paul Keddle, Nyle Slade and Jack Biggs. It was another solid performance from Corries who took 32 minutes to break the deadlock when Craig Evans fired into the top corner. Two goals in three minutes just before half-time however put them in command going into half-time. Matty Tong rounded off a good move to dink the ball over the ‘keeper and former Hay striker, Tong then struck again.

Paul Keddle extended the lead after the break and substitute, Nyle Slade got in on the act following a goalmouth scramble before Jack Biggs completed the six hit in stoppage time. Keddle put Biggs through and he rounded the keeper to make it another good day at the office for The Chisels.

Corries host Blaenavon Blues on Saturday at The Rich Field and a win would see them go top of the Ardal League South East with a number of other teams playing in the FAW Amateur Trophy.

It was a good week for Corries with their Youth team gaining their first points in The FAW Youth League South East with a thrilling 7-6 win against Trethomas Bluebirds Development at The Rich Field last Wednesday night. Leo Davies, Jamie Williams and Oliver Powell all scored twice with Finlay Daniels also on target.

Corries Youth failed to build on this result after going down 4-0 at home to Undy AFC Youth on Sunday. The damage was done in the opening six minutes when the visitors scored three times and not long after added a fourth. But from then Corries knuckled down and did well against their more experienced opponents.

ARDAL NORTHERN LEAGUE CUP

Radnor Valley returned to winning ways at the weekend to progress in the Ardal Northern League Cup with a hard earned 2-1 success over a good Dolgellau side at The Bypass. The Goats bounced back from their midweek defeat against Builth Wells with goals from Josh Traylor-Hall and Joey Price giving them a moral boosting win.

Radnor dominated much of the game and went ahead when defender, Josh Traylor-Hallheaded his first goal of the season from Joey Price’s corner at the back post on 21 minutes. There were few clear cut chances at either end but The Goats, who are keen to strengthen their small squad, doubled their lead on the hour. Charlie Beaumont turned on the halfway line and played Joey Price through and he rounded the keeper. Gerwyn Williams reduced the deficit when Dolgellau got a rather dubious penalty deep into stoppage time but that proved the last kick of the game.

Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells are however out of the Cup with Builth a shade unfortunate after being beaten 4-3 on penalties by Kerry after two evenly matched teams were locked together at 1-1 after 90 minutes on The Lant Field.

Connor Bird got the ball in the net for The Bulls with a super finish from a Rhys Thomas cross but the effort was ruled out by a linesman’s flag. Barry Bellis then fired Kerry ahead on 39 minutes with a low strike from the edge of the box but Thomas was inches away from an equaliser for Builth when his tremendous 25-yard drive hit the bar. Builth, who were without eight of their first team squad, did level before half-time. Danny Hall, who impressed in the first half, slipped Aeron Powell through and when he was brought down by Xavier Matisse, Hall scored the resulting penalty. After the break, Builth goalkeeper, James Spooner saved well from Neil Mitchell following probably Kerry’s best move of the game but Builth edged the second half and finished strongly. Matt Mumford cleared off the line from Powell and Ciaran Price was denied by Kerry keeper, Ryan Andrew. Then in time added on Builth thought they had snatched a winner when the ball ricochetted in off substitute, Price but their celebrations were cut short with the referee spotting a handball in the build-up.

In the shoot out, Adam Farmer, Alex Hicks and Lee James netted for Builth but Ryan Powell blazed over while Jamie Evans saw his effort saved by Andrew. Spooner kept them in the tie saving Kerry’s fourth from Mitchell but Matisse scored the final penalty to edge Kerry through.

Llandrindod made their exit being beaten 4-2 at  Bow Street who avenged a league defeat on The Broadway just three days earlier. Llandrindod, like Builth, were without a host of regulars at the weekend and travelled with a bare eleven but were very much in the tie until a late fourth goal ended their brave challenge. A mix-up between Zak Baker and‘keeper, James Barker allowed Callum Page to open the scoring for Bow Street from close range. Former Machynlleth player-manager, Page added a second from the penalty spot but Llandrindod immediately got one back with a penalty of their own converted by Liam Hall after he was brought down. John James regained Street’s two goal advantage with a header following a short corner but Llandrindod kept themselves in the tie. They grabbed a second goal two minutes before half-time after Hall and Richie Powell combined with Powell squaring for Tom Durant to fire home. Bow Street saw the greater share of possession in the second half but Llandrindod hung in there until, with four minutes remaining, Sion Ewart spotted Barker off his line to net the best goal of the game.

Llanidloes Town are through after beating Penycae 3-1 on penalties after it finished 1-1 at KVM Park with both goals coming early in the second half. William Nevitt put Penycae ahead but former Rhayader Town defender, Keegan Bradley equalised.

Llanfair twice led through a Ryan Price own goal and a Flynn Morris strike but Andrew Vale and Jay Richardson forced the shoot out.

There were plenty of goals at Llangollen Town where the home side defeated Cefn Albion 6-4 with William Cooke completing a hat-trick and Meilir Williams was another hat-trick man as Llanuwchllyn overcame Chirk AAA 5-0 at home.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)

Warren McFadden scored twice as Rhayader Town maintained their momentum by moving up to fourth in the MMP Central Wales League (South) with a 4-1 home victory over Hay St Marys. Darren Murphy put Rhayader ahead but Ricky Lynes drew The Saints level. McFadden restored Rhayader’s advantage from the penalty spot before half-time and the influential Sam Rees added a third on 70 minutes. Rhayader, who certainly look fitter than last season, pressed relentlessly in the second half and missed a number of chances before McFadden completed their fourth straight win with his second of the afternoon.

Builth Wells Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season beaten 6-0 at Bont. Builth travelled without several key players and paid the price with the Ceredigion side scoringthree times in the opening thirteen minutes through Gethin Williams-Evans, Ethan Rees (pen) and Dion Davies. Garin Evans extended the lead before half-time and struck again after the break along with Davies.

Presteigne St Andrews endured a tough afternoon at Ffrostrasol where the home side won 8-0 to go top of the table on goal difference. Last season’s Costcutter Ceredigion League first division Champions scored six times in the first half with Andrii Solyliak leading the way with a hat-trick while Luke Evans, Tomos Evans an Meredydd Derbyshire also found the net. Dafydd Phillips, who missed a first half penalty for Ffrostrasol, made amends by scoring twice in the second half when Presteigne turned in a much improved showing albeit too little too late.

In the weekend’s other game, Llanilar beat Caersws Development 5-0 with Sion Evans helping himself to a hat-trick while Ryan Edwards and Osian Simpson-Jones completed the nap hand.

Reuben Baker handed Llandrindod an early lead but Adam Watson levelled before half-time and two goals in the last ten minutes from Tom Groves and a second for Watson clinched it for The Swifts.

Two other former Mid Wales league (South) sides began their campaigns in the Amateur League and there were mixed fortunes for Newcastle and Felindre. Morgan Oakley’s first half hat-trick inspired Newcastle to a 3-2 home success over Trefonen while Felindre were beaten 3-0 at Four Crosses Reserves.

GWENT CENTRAL LEAGUE

Talgarth Town kicked off their season in the Gwent Central League first division coming from behind to draw 3-3 at Fairfield United. The Royals found themselves trailing 2-0 and 3-1 but hit back through Harry Sharman, Rob Gunning and Tom Francis.

MIDWEEK ROUND-UP

Kieran McCarley lit up The Broadway on Wednesday night with the only goal as Llandrindod Wells knocked Bow Street off the top of the Ardal League North East with a narrow 1-0 victory. The Spa bounced back from five straight defeats in all competitions to notch their first league win of the term with the shock of the night.

A fantastic defensive performance laid the platform and both teams had chances but the only goal arrived on 59 minutes when Ashley Jones headed a Zak Baker free-kick goalwards and McCarley netted from close range. Mention must be made of midfielder, Rob Kear, who for the fourth time this season, was Llandrindod’s man of the match.

Llangollen Town slipped to a surprise 2-1 defeat a Penycae who scored through Will Scott and Will Nevitt which means Brickfield Rangers are now the only side with a one hundred per cent record. And they needed two late goals from Andrew Vale, who completed a hat-trick, to secure a 4-2 success at bottom of the table Chirk.

The Radnor Robins made it five wins from five in the league with two goals from the returning Callum Stead and one from substitute, Sam Hoyle. Guto Roberts had equalised just before half-time for Llanilar who had Ryan Hopkins sent off.

Rhayader Town hinted that they could be emerging as genuine title contenders with a superb 2-0 victory over defending Champions, Penparcau on The Weirglodd. Rhayader weathered early pressure from the visitors and capitalised when Luke Sherbon was sin binned with topscorer, Bradley Goodwin going through one on one to slot home. Penparcau, who do not look quite the force their were last season, tired in the second half and Warren McFadden sealed the points for The Red Kites from the penalty spot.

Penybont United were eyeing a win a Llanidloes Town Reserves but despite second half opportunities had to settle for a point in a goalless draw while Penrhyncoch Reserves became the first side to take points off Ffrostrasol with Sion James, Harley Lawton and Taylor Watts (pen) securing an impressive 3-1 win in what was their best performance of the term.
