Builth Wells remain fourth in the Ardal League North East following a narrow 2-1 win against Cefn Albion on The Lant Field.
ARDAL LEAGUE NORTH EAST
First half goals from Ollie Woods and Cormac O’Byrne paved the way for The Bulls, who are still reeling following the loss of Tommy Rowlands and Lyndon Jones to Caersws.
A bright start from Builth was rewarded when Woods opened the scoring when Albion failed to clear a Chris Roff free-kick. O’Byrne then popped up with his first goal for The Bulls when he met a perfectly delivered Adam Farmer free-kick with a first time finish at the far post. Builth were well worth that interval lead but the visitors pulled a goal back on the hour when Alex Williams latched on to Connor Kendrick’s through ball and rounded keeper, Kham Steventon. Builth needed a third goal and Jamie Evans hit the post and Farmer went close with a free-kick. But a third goal did not come and an ill-disciplined Albion, who collected six yellow cards and saw one of their management team sent off, might have snatched a point when Williams hit the post in time added on.
Llandrindod Wells ended a run of three defeats with a 2-0 home win over Chirk AAA on The Broadway. Both goals came in a three-minute spell around the half hour mark. Samed De Groot put the Spa men ahead from a Danny Hall pass and Kejan Foryszewski added a second with a header from a pinpoint Gavin Rowlands cross following a short corner. Chirk tried hard to get back in the game but Llandrindod stood strong in defence to notch their first win of the new Year.
Bow Street are back on top of the table after a convincing 5-1 victory over Llansantffraid Village. Callum Page led the way with a hat-trick, which included two penalties, and Caio Carruthers and Ryan Evans were also on target with Hagi Drammeh replying for Llansantffraid who had keeper, Rhys Jones sent off.
Kerry slipped to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Rhos Aelwyd with Kai Morris and Scott Reeves giving the hosts a two-goal lead before Luke Mumford reduced the arrears.
Llanuwchllyn continued their climb and moved into the top six following a 4-1 verdict over Llanidloes Town. An Ed Clarke own goal put them ahead but Lewis Jones equalised with his first goal for The Daffs. But two goals from recent signing, Rhys Rowlands and one from topscorer, Meilir Williams sealed the win for the title favourites.
The Brickfield Rangers v Dolgellau game was postponed while elsewhere Llangollen Town and Penycae drew 2-2 with Jack Welsh twice putting Llangollen in front only for Jac Scott and Jack Orbell to level.
There were two games in midweek with Kerry going temporarily top following a 4-1 win at 10-man Llanidloes Town. Luke Mumford bagged a hat-trick and Richard Davies also found the net with Joe Evans replying for The Daffs, who had Daniel Lewis sent off midway through the first half.
Llanuwchllyn surprisingly dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Llansantffraid with Will Owen equalising after Lukman Suworeh had given Llansantffraid the lead.
Llansantffaid, Llanidloes and Chirk are now well adrift at the bottom and look set to go down which if that happens would mean back-to-back relegations for both Llanidloes and Chirk.
CENTRAL WALES CHALLENGE CUP
In-form Radnor Valley booked their place in the semi-finals of the Central Wales Cup with a 1-0 victory at Carno on Sunday. The Goats dug deep to extend their recent unbeaten run to eight in all competitions with Callum Matthews grabbing the all-important goal midway through the first half.
This was a good result for Radnor who were without Matt Croose, Elliot Morris and Geraint Lloyd and playing for the second time in the weekend whereas Carno had been given a free Saturday.
Radnor now join holders, Guilsfield and Waterloo Rovers in the last four with the remaining spot going to either Builth Wells or Kerry.
MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUES
Knighton Town dropped points for the second week in a row but still remain 20 points clear at the top of the MMP Central Wales League (South).
Having seen their 100 per cent record dented against Bont the previous week, The Radnor Robins were held to a 2-2 draw at Tregaron. Ryan Davies gave Tregaron an early lead which was cancelled out by Taylor Wozencraft. Luke Boundford must have thought he had won it for Knighton with their second goal on 86 minutes but Jac Hockenhull grabbed a last-gasp leveller for Tregaron.
Elsewhere it was a disappointing day for the other local teams with Builth Wells Reserves, Hay St Marys, Penybont United, Presteigne St Andrews and Rhayader Town suffering defeats.
Rhayader, who started the day second in the table, lost 2-1 at home to Bow Street Reserves who opened the scoring through Lee Crumper. John Baguley equalised for The Red Kites on 20 minutes but Joey Williams got the decisive score for Bow Street with eight minutes remaining. Rhayader have seen young defender, Theo Earp sign for Caersws Development.
Bont take over second spot after beating a depleted Hay St Marys 6-2 at home. Early goals from Will Evans and Mat Thomas put the Ceredigion side in the driving seat but Hay, playing their sixth successive away game, responded through Sam Ford and Tom Ritchie. But Thomas and Gerwyn Williams-Evans made it 4-2 to Bont by half-time and Evans-Williams and Ifan Pugh completed the win after the break. Hay have signed two of their former players with Curtis Bounds and Kyle Harding both returning to the club.
Builth Wells Reserves were away at Aberystwyth University where early goals from Josh Evans and Jonny Mead put the students on the front foot. Vince Orford increased the lead and any hopes of a Builth comeback faded when captain, Aled Powell saw red three minutes before half-time.
Penybont travelled to Machynlleth for the second meeting between the side in as many weeks. Having lost 2-0 at home seven days earlier, The Polecats were looking to redress the balance but were blown away in the first half when Iestyn Evans, Liam Sully, Joe Green and Louis Roberts put Machynlleth 4-0 ahead. Luke Vince-Holt extended the lead before Penybont rallied reducing the deficit through topscorer, Owain Rowlands and Callum Shaw.
Presteigne turned in a much improved performance but that could not prevent a 4-0 defeat at Penparcau where Ben Lewis put the home side ahead. Player-manager, Mattie Davies grabbed a crucial second just minutes before half-time and Mikey Gornall and Lewis netted before Presteigne were reduced to ten with Ed Richardson-Morris sent off in stoppage time. Penparcau are expected to complete the transfers of Ciaran Evans, Harley Lawton and Callum Evans back from Penrhyncoch this week.
Bont had gone down to a high scoring 5-3 defeat at a very strong Penrhyncoch Reserves in midweek. Goals from Liam Jaques, Chris Wilkins (2), Cai Williams and Ifan Burrell gave Penrhyn, the spoils with Jordan Lee Perry, Garin Evans and Dion Davies keeping Bont in contention.
The leadership in the MMP Central Wales League (North) again changed hands and in-form Forden United went top with a 2-1 home success over Berriew. Ross Harris and an own goal gave Forden a tenth straight league win with Jake Meredith netting for Berriew.
Welshpool Town won 2-1 at Bishops Castle thanks to Ben Jenkins and Ehan Kinsey after Martyn Ziemann had struck first for Castle and Dyffryn Banw claimed only their second point of the season with a 3-3 draw at Montgomery Town. Banw led three times through Joe Evans (2) and Gerallt Davies with Lee Jones, Harry Evans and Jack Williams hitting back for the hosts.
EMRYS MORGAN CUP
Four teams from the MMP Central League (South), Abermule, Barmouth, Llanrhaeadr and Trewern United will contest this season’s Emrys Morgan Cup semi-finals.
Llanrhaeadr, most people’s favourites, went through 4-2 at Waterloo Rovers with goals from Matthew Evans, Will Roberts-Morris and Billy Clarke (2).
Laurence Chesworth, Joe Soar, Ryan Williams and Osioan Ephraim saw Barmouth to a 4-0 win against Felinfach while Abermule recorded a surprisingly comfortable 3-0 victory over Ffostrasol thanks to Adam Putson, Tai Jones and Oliver Jones.
Trewern came from behind to triumph 2-1 at Llanilar with goals from Greg Pryce and Warren Roberts after Harvey Matthews had put Llanilar ahead.
OTHER LEAGUES
Adam Watson netted a late penalty to earn St Harmon a 5-5 draw at home against Waterloo Rovers Reserves in the JT Hughes Montgomery Amateur League. But The Swifts, who have now lost just one of their last six, will be kicking themselves after earlier squandering a four-goal lead. Watson and Tom Groves put St Harmon two up and they were in dreamland when Rhys Davies and Ben Jackaman added further goals. Rhys Spears and Dylan Torelli began Waterloo’s comeback before half-time and Shaun Roberts, Torelli and Konrad Scott then took them ahead before Watson spared St Harmon blushes.
Newcastle drew 1-1 at Four Crosses Reserves with Morgan Oakley heading them in front from a Tom Price cross early on, only for Jack Coleman to equalise late in the game for Crosses.
Felindre fell to a high scoring 6-3 defeat at Llanfechain where it was 3-3 at half-time with Ryan Abel (pen), Sam Bevan and Paul Reynolds scoring for The Millers. But they ran out of steam in the second half with Abba Salihi bagging a hat-trick for the home side and Gary Meredith (2) and Aled Benbow also on target.
Brecon FC bowed out of the Merthyr League Philip Flye Challenge Cup after a 3-2 defeat at home at the hands of Aberfan Rangers. CYMRU LEAGUES
It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show for Caersws who, following their fantastic win against Holywell Town the previous week, slipped to a 1-0 defeat at bottom of the table Prestatyn Town in the JD Cymru (North).
A scrappy affair was settled by Tyler Joyce who scored the only goal on 86 minutes but Caersws could have levelled only for Sam Phillips to see his injury time penalty saved.
Penrhyncoch, who have signed former Caersws and Llanidloes Town midfielder, Elliot Jones from Kerry, lost 3-0 at Denbigh Town leaving Guilsfield to provide the one bright spot of the afternoon for Mid Wales sides. The Guils, who themselves have signed Cameron Allen from Penrhyn, beat Bangor 1876 2-1 with goals from Jamie Hyne and Iwan Matthews. Newtown’s winless run in the JD Cymru Premier continued after a 2-2 draw with Briton Ferry Llansawel on Friday night. The Robins included four new signings in their match day squad, two in the starting line-up and two on the bench, and looked on course for victory when Aaron Williams and Jason Oswell gave them an early two goal lead. But Corey Hurford reduced the arrears in first half stoppage time and Luke Bowen equalised to leave Newtown in the relegation places.
Aberystwyth Town remain rock bottom after a 2-1 defeat at home against Barry Town United leaving them eight points from safety with time running out.
